We had the first birthday party, and thanks to the pitchers of mojitos that were made, I survived. The first chunk of the day was a bugger though; it was pouring rain [I left two books outside, which are now ruined,] I realized that the balloons I got said Happy 8th birthday, and my daughters turning one, the dog we were pet sitting for busted out of our house, and some people canceled last minute feigning sickness. Still, it was a blast.
We got the dog back, my mom brought over appropriate balloons [after I attempted to cross off the 8 and put a heart in it's place,] the food was delivered by my caterer/bff who made a delicious array of salds, and sandwiches, and Paige didn’t spill anything on her polka dot dress [well, until we picked blackberries]and I w had FUN. She got some great books, and great outfits. She also got a tricycle [and one day, her feet may touch the peddles!] She ate her first cupcake, with homemade strawberry icing [with real strawberries!] and she got a billion hugs and kisses.
And it wasn’t outrageous like some kids parties; it was family [those who decided to come, which I'm still bitter about since Phil and I make an attempt to go to every goddamn party they have, but only THREE people, all in the same family showed up for Paige's party], and my friends, and my lovely stinky poo eating daughter. And yes, she has new toys and still walks around with old dishtowels and dog bones.
But here’s to first birthdays! Or, first birthday PARTIES..her real birthday isn’t until next week and we are having a bbq for my husbands dads-side, and the weeknd after that Grandma is having a little shindig for her friends in honor of my bean, LUCKY duck she is.
So I’m a slacker mom. When I had my baby shower thrown for me, I never sent out thank you notes [really I was feeling kind of bitter that everything I got was pink, frilly, and the exact opposite of what I had picked out..] I have wedding thank yous that need to go out, that currently may be collecting dust somewhere in our new house…and now, I’ve settled on a date for my daughter’s first birthday, and I have invitations ready to go, and I ordered some stamps that have a “feminist” slogan on them, and I’m good to go.
Until I realized her birthday is in like, two weeks, and that’s not enough time to send out snail mail invites, and get RSVPS back. How lame, right? I am going to see the majority of my family on the weekend, so they are going to get hand delivered invites, but for the most part I’m thinking about emailing people the info. With a cute little graphic I had made.
I know the in-law and my mom are going to throw a shit fit when they find out I’m emailing invites, but a slacker mom’s gotta do, what a slacker moms gotta do, right? And it’s 2007 so screw ya’ll, email is IN, snail mail is OUT…right? Maybe? I mean, I love getting mail, and I get twitchy on my way to the mail BOX anticipating what’s inside, but I am running out of time here people, running out of time!
I promised myself I wouldn’t be one of those parents who FREAK OUT! About their kids first birthday. After all, my daughters hobbies include spitting yogurt at me, doing so big, waving bye bye and ripping up paper…she’d be happy doing a smash up of all those things, and forgoing naps for one day.
Than I went to the craft store, and saw adorable little first birthday banners with a little floral vintage print and I thought, why not? Then I thought it would be totally rad to have nursery rhyme themed cupcakes at a birthday party, and finally last night while I drifted off I had the idea for totally cute pot-luck first birthday themed invites that would instruct each person to bring either an appetizer, salad, or dessert [the main course being BBQ food like burgers, chicken wings in ginger sauce, hot dogs, and what have you...] I mean, pardon my French but doesn’t that sound totally fucking awesome? And everyone could totally bring their dogs.
I’m now incredibly excited. I have created a “Paige’s first birthday” bookmark and put possible gifts under it. Yes I do plan on buying her organic expensive as hell butt cream and no she won’t know what it is but I will and it’s got cute packaging. I picked out favors to give away [little seed packets for people to plant with her photo on them...] and well, now I guess I just need time since her birthday isn’t until uh, August.
