17 again
Zac Efron, Disney’s new tweeny-bopper idol, heart-throb and meal ticket is working hard plugging his new movie with Mathew Perry, 17 Again, which comes out this Friday. If you watched American Idol tonight, you saw the big marketing promotion in full swing and Disney continues to market to every prepubescent girl in America on the Disney Channel and buying spots on younger children’s programing, problem is, a minute little detail that is continued to be overlooked — the movie is rated PG-13. Now, I’m no prude and not necessarily opposed to taking young children to such a movie, but how many moms out there are going to take their little 7 year olds girls to this movie, thinking that it’s a Disney movie with the High School Musical safe cutie Zac Efron only to discover, uh….it may not be appropriate?
According to the Motion Picture Association, a PG-13 indicates:
A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them. A PG-13 motion picture may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category.
So, is Disney being irresponsible, marketing to little girls or does the responsiblity of appropriateness land squarely on the parents? I think it’s a very real possiblity that this movie is going to include swearing and sexual situations.

I agree with you! They have marketed this thing to death and my 8 year old is so excited that she wants to see it opening night. I have had to explain to her that because of the rating, we have to know an adult who has seen it or we will have to look on parent blogs to see how other parents rate it for pre-teens. I’m also not a prude and a few words here and there (even though I don’t really like it) aren’t going to scar them, but I have allowed my kids to see PG movies in the past thinking they would be ok, and the sexual situations are WAY to mature for them. Hopefully, someone will post a review after they see the movie this weekend.

Yeah, I screwed up I think. Sari is only 9 and she was all geared up to see it. We celebrated my niece’s sweet 16 Saturday with a surprise party at a restaurant. Afterward we took the girls to the movies to see “17 Again”. Sari wasn’t planning on going because we figured my niece would want to be with her girlfriends. My niece is so precious though and thought it was ridiculous that her best bud Sari couldn’t come. SO I agreed and Sari was thrilled to be at the movies alone with the big girls. Of course my niece knew that I was sitting out in the hall with a big hat on and a book in front of my face, but Sari was none the wiser! I checked some parent guides today and the thing that bothered me was “lots of sexual references”. I don’t know what they were or whether or not she even heard them… but I regret assuming it was appropriate based on Disney, Zac, and all the marketing.
