Pope Bans Condoms in Africa??

Posted March 18, 2009 at 7:23 pm by Kris

I’m not Catholic, I don’t really believe in God, I’m not even very religious.  Reading this article on CNN about the Pope’s initial visit to Cameroon and his reaffirmation of banning condoms in Africa really illustrates how religious beliefs get in the way of common sense.

If the Catholic Church is so involved in HIV care and, as stated, “…that it is probably the largest private provider of HIV care in the world.”, why not support the use of condoms? Especially in Africa, where whole villages can be wiped out by HIV/AIDS.

More than 22 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV, according to a 2008 UNAIDS/WHO report. Nine out of 10 children with HIV in the world live in the region, which has 11.4 million orphans because of AIDS, the report said, and 1.5 million people there died of the disease in 2007.

Unbelievably, the Pope is considering allowing only married couples to use condoms. How generous. What about the people who aren’t married? Who got HIV from a blood transfusion or something other than sexual relations?  Yet, even that idea is hanging by a thread, it being unclear as how the Pope will vote on this.

There has been fierce debate between those who advocate the use of condoms to help stop the spread of the epidemic and those who oppose it.

Why should there be any debate against the use of condoms? Really? Just let the people USE the condoms, hell hand ‘em out.

What is the Pope concerned about? It reminds me of the Tao/bob comet people. This is not religion at work to save soles. It a propaganda brainwashing to control people. Morality is not letting something bad happen when you can prevent something bad from happening. By all definitions HIV is a bad thing. so prevent it with condoms. OK! the church comes up with rules to get you into heaven. We could call them prophylactics. Now! It we declared that the Pope could not use prophylactics to help get people to heaven then he would be out of business. The Pope wants to have potential soles for heaven and yet he is not using a prophylactic to helpthem find heaven. That is illogical and irrational and produces a stressed out bunch of soles that will never be able to get to heaven. The whole idea of religion is to get people to heaven and the Pope has just broken that rule

Kris, I don’t understand this either. I’m not Catholic so it’s hard for me to understand a lot of its religion. That said, the use of condoms can prevent the spread of AIDS, which doesn’t discriminate by religious beliefs.

As religious leaders, the Pope and the Vatican are not so worried about death as they are about the nature of people’s souls. From their standpoint, AIDS won’t have an effect on people getting into heaven, but carnal knowledge out of wedlock is another matter. Also, another thing to consider: Scenario 1: the Church tells people not to have sex until marriage. If they are devout Catholics, they will obey. If they don’t really care about the religion, they’ll have sex anyways.
Scenario 2: the Church tells people not to use condoms as protection from AIDS. If they are devout Catholics, they are already abstaining. If they don’t really care about the religion…
Yes, I realize that without the Church’s support condoms won’t be as widely available, but are we possibly blowing this out of proportion?

I’m just saying….why ban condoms? As Hillary said:

the use of condoms can prevent the spread of AIDS, which doesn’t discriminate by religious beliefs.
