Allison G...that is hilarious. The visual of someone wrestling a bear to get a shock collar on it....I love it!

Maybe a paint ball gun would keep him away or at least out of the yard until you could get into the house.

Does a fence keep a bear out? Just wondering…

I doubt it would, since some bears can climb trees. An invisible fence that gives a shock might though.

I think invisible fences that shock only work with a collar, like for dogs.
I wouldn't want to wrestle Smokey the Bear down to the ground just to strap a receiving collar on him. 8O

Not to mention getting it off him to charge it, and then putting it back on again. ;)

Yep, bears climb things, swim, eat garbage...but the bears we have around here are pretty harmless, and more scared of us. Plus with two large, hulking dogs they don't get too close, and stay in the woods beyond my property to eat the shrubs and berries. Hunting is also allowed near us during certain chunks of the year, to keep the population down, and the people safe, and there are bear groups that encourage people to take down bird feeders if they live in an area where bears are out, and ready to eat.

I doubt it would, since some bears can climb trees. An invisible fence that gives a shock might though. It wouldn't hurt to look into some sort of device to keep the bear out of the actual yard. Because it might get comfortable and try to get inside the house. The Bobcats near my dad's house have all kept a distance (except to eat pets that are mistakenly left outside, but to do that, they need to compete with the coyotes).

I'd have mixed feelings, too. On the one hand, it is SUPER cool that you live near such wilderness and that there are bears right outside your house. On the other hand, bears are scary.

My parents (well, now just my dad, it's so hard to get used to saying that) live in Tucson and they routinely have Bobcats outside their house. Tucson is very protective of its wildlife, so they don't allow any hunting or harm to the wild cats, which is GREAT, but it's still kind of frightening because those suckers'll kill ya dead, too, just like a big black bear would.

Oh and I meant to also say, in answer to your blogs name. No, the bear is probably shitting berries from your bush in your yard and not so much in the woods! YUCK! lol ;) Now theres a pile to clean! Time to make your 'Honey Do...' list! ;)

H o l y c o w!!! WOW! Well that would make me never let my kids ever play outside by themselves! How cute and scary all at once! Glad youre ok! :) Makes me think of the movie the Great Outdoors with John Candy. The bears were sitting on top of their car so he threw candy bars at them to make them get off but all they did was eat the candy bars on his car! lol
