HELP AN IMPERFECT MOM FEED HER KID

Posted July 7, 2008 at 3:30 pm by Tracy

No, no I’m not asking for donations…

But I am asking for suggestions.

Now, I enjoy cooking. It’s summer, I’m chunky, I REALLY dig having a BBQ and homemade baked beans almost every night, but on the rare nights it’s “too hot to cook” I enjoy going out to eat with my husband, and the kid. But what I don’t like, is the kids menu options…

Chicken fingers and fries

Pizza

Burger and fries

Macaroni and cheese [or some other pasta, but NOTHING Whole Wheat]

And the other day, I went to a little independetly owned place and got chicken, and fries for her [eating the fries myself, and peeling only the white chicken thus letting my meal grow cold] and throwing away the pack of Oreos they included for dessert. Like okay, carbs carbs and OH WAIT here’s some Oreo’s!

I know places like Wendy’s try to include like, an apple or something but even Parent magazines list of child friendly places to eat are crappy chain resturants.

So what I’m getting at is, where the hell do you go to eat that’s healthy? WHY can’t KIDS MEALS have oh I don’t know, hummus and pita, turkey roll up, and strawberry applesauce? WHY GOD WHY.

At McD’s you an order a grilled chicken breast, apple dippers, and the milk or juice.

Although not everyday fear the actual kids meal is what *I* order. It’s the correct portion size and calories aren’t too bad. Particularly if you substitute Apple slices for the fries.

My DD (9) adores the fruit and walnut salad there too. If you pair that with the chicken it’s not bad at all.

Lest I sound too hippie crunchy granola for words, I aim to eat healthy at home so when we do eat out, I don’t fret the occasional fry.

That would be “everyday fare” not “everyday fear.” Although if you eat at McD’s every day, you should probably feel fear.

We almost never go to fast food places or chain restaurants. We live in an amazing town with dozens of excellent restaurants, so that’s where we go when we eat out. Our kids usually order off the adult menu — salmon, steak, pasta, etc. — and just eat what we eat.

Tracey I hear ya! I am sick to death of fast food places and other restaraunts only offering carbs and sweets! I kinda have the opposite problem with my kids though. My son is allergic to meat, fruit, milk, eggs and so on, so when we go out to eat its nearly impossible to order anything for him! Thank God he loves salads!!! I just wish more places offered salads that were kid friendly! Someone mentioned the fruit and walnut salad (yummy!) and they also have the southwestern salad (yummy too) but my son cant have fruit and wont eat the southwestern one! If more places would come up with some new ideas on cool kid friendly salads and stuff we’d have more to choose from! We do let my son cheat sometimes but c’mon….cant they give kids a better choice to eat healthier?! People constantly talk about how our kids are over weight but yet the restaraunts (that yes, we dont have to go to, although it is nice to not have to cook sometimes) are only offering junk!

The only one places that I have found (so far) for my other children, that serve good food are Arbys and Bread Co.! Arbys offers turkey sands, ham sands, fruit cups, baked chips, milks and other things. Bread Co. does this too and also offers yogurts and organic milk products! My other two children love those things so its nice. Try those two places! Bread Co is a little higher in price than say…McDonalds but the end result is better…healthier food! Good luck! ;)

We had a similar problem, often I just ask for a small plate or salad bowl, and my DH and I give up small portions of what we’re eating, more recently I’ve been ordering “sides” for my DD, a side salad with ranch on the side so she can “dip” her veggies, and then a side of mac n’ cheese or rice pilaf with a tablespoon of mommies steamed veggies and chicken stirred in, sometimes this starts to feel like cooking at the table. Also never hesitate to ask for a substitution at a restaurant, just because steamed veggies or baked sweet potatoes aren’t listed on the kids menu doesn’t mean they won’t trade fries for something different.

I don’t know, I just don’t worry about it. We don’t eat out very much (once a week, typically) and typically, the kids eat stuff just off the kids’ menu and I don’t fret. We eat well at home. My children eat tons of fruits and vegetables, so the rogue chicken finger or order of fries doesn’t really bother me. Only one of my three kids eats fries anyway, and by “eat” them, I mean she’ll get two or three in her mouth. The other two don’t even touch them.

We don’t do fast food because my kids don’t eat fast food. I buy it and they don’t touch it, it gets cold and I throw it away (because I refuse to demand they eat their burger before we leave) and then they’re hungry when we get home and I end up making them something healthy anyway.

So, when they eat something like macaroni and cheese or a $5 order of grilled cheese (which just about kills us), we don’t worry about it. For us, going out to eat is about not having to cook and clean up and deal with the whole eating at home thing. And, for us to get a treat, something we don’t usually get. So, letting the kids eat unhealthy food or outrageously priced Kraft or grilled cheese, then oh well, it’s worth it sometimes.

But, it’s also cool to see them eat real food and love it, too, which happens more and more as they age.

I bring my own veggies for her (she’s young enough that doesn’t get looks), order a burger and ditch the bun and sometimes order fruit. I’ve also given her some of my protien and ordered her sides of veggies. If you’re talking neighborhood joint, I would ask them to make something healthier but smaller portioned.
Still thinking, but since adult portions are so larger, could you hack together something for her from the adult meals?

We don’t order off the kids’ menu. Either my dd will order a full portion and half will become a lunch or dinner for the next day–or she’ll take some of my food and dh’s and call it her meal. I agree that the kid’s menu choices are limited and insulting frankly to those who have kids that are willing to eat anything and wish to have choices. I always wonder–is this strictly an American thing or do they have kid’s menus elsewhere too? I’d venture to guess that in other places they don’t cater to kids the way restaurants feel they need to here in the US.
