Pet sounds
My husband and I didn’t have dogs growing up. We wanted them, sure…I even went so far as to making a “Why Tracy and Marc [my brother] should have a dog..” Made with poster board, and Crayola scented markets. Instead of a dog, for my birthday I got a parakeet with violent tendencies who you had to feed with a glove on. A few Christmases later I got a Beta fish who I named Santa, and who I wished would bite the dust on an almost daily basis. Skip to age fourteen where I found a calico kitten and convinced my parents we should keep her; she turned into the worlds largest and meanest cat. So yes, I had pets, but they were all assholes and they weren’t dogs.
I love dogs, and I think it’s safe to say I like them more than most people. I wanted our daughter to grow up with tons of animals and so when she was five months we adopted Bailey our Bernese Mountain dog/Collie mix. He’s sort of a dud, but he’s huge and great with our daughter. She can pull his ears, poke his eyeballs, sit on him and grab his teeth and he takes it like a pro. We wanted to get him a friend so two days ago we did it, and we adopted Logan a nine week old German Shepherd puppy.
We are insane.
Leave it to us to have a baby, two puppies, and a new house that needs to be unpacked. I kind of love the chaos of it though, and I’ve accepted that the WHITE kitchen floor will have muddy puppy paws on it forever. He’s a good puppy, shy, and he gets along with the cat better. The baby loves him but she loves anything with four legs and an abundance of fur.
Pictures coming, but here’s Bailey and the baby girl. Do you have pets? If not, WHY?

Tracey,
SOOOO CUTE….the baby and the dog. Good breed for kiddos too. I LOVE German Shepherds…they look kindof mean, but they are so loyal and protective. Baily looks so mellow. I want him for my own!
So new house, baby, 2 new dogs and the pool…you are a BRAVE LADY. I like you.
Keep us posted.
P.S. Daughter has a BETA, Sampson. And for a fish, he is cool. I swear he has a personality. And he is spoiled too. BUt I prefer my dogs~

Awww. I have cats. I have always had cats. My mom used to breed persians when I was little, and then we moved on to humane society adopted cats. There was a period of about six months, when I lived in a dorm in college when I didn’t have a cat of my own. That’s it.
When I was pregnant with my now nine-year-old, we adopted a staffordshire bull terrier from a breeder in texas. He was AKC registered, but he was brain damaged. He was a great dog in that he loved the kids and had a pure and loving heart. But, he was an awful dog in that he had many neuroses that manifested themselves in incurable behavioral problems. Putting him down when we had to was heartbreaking, but living a dog-free life is so much easier.
There is an old schnauzer at tae kwon do who just slowly waddles around after the kids and then sits still and basks in their petting. If we could have THAT dog, then I’d get another dog. But, I guess since he’s not available, I’ll just coo over other people’s dogs.

Oh Tracy — I wish I lived near you because I’d think we’d get along quite well!
I LOVE dogs — and like you, I often prefer them to people! I didn’t have a dog growing up either, despite constant begging and pleading.
Now I have Hunter (http://blog.imperfectparent.com/2008/05/29/an-unconvenient-love/) whom I adore. He loves kids, especially babies, is super protective and loyal, and a constant ball of energy. He is also amazing with Rebecca, my sister with DS.
I highly recommend a boxer to those with kids — they are great family dogs — but they do require lots of attention and love.
My older sister is NOT a fan of dogs. She has a genuine fear of them — big and small. She is pregnant with her first child and my BIL really wants his son to have a dog. She’s not budging on the idea.

I love cats, but the one we have is an asshole. She scratches the kids. And she only likes me. Wait. Re-phrase: she LOOOOVES me. And I hate it!
She constantly follows me around the house, to every room. And she keeps rubbing up against me. I get no space from her unless I throw her outside. If she were a boyfriend, I would have broken up with her 2 weeks after she moved in. Why can’t she love someone else?????
Now onto the dog. Ugh! Dh HAD to have her. She’s a black lab and we got her as a puppy from our neighbors. We got to see her grow from a wiggly little maggot into a pup old enough to take home. She just turned a year and still has puppy brain.
She chews/has chewed/and will probably chew everything we own. There’s something new for me to find destoyed every day! The deck, the BBQ gas line, the lawnmower gas line, the electrical cords on the weed whacker, the porch swing cushons, her doghouse……
The first thig was my blueberry bushes. She wan’t even 8inches high then. The latest victim, my son’s new slip-and-slide that he only used once. Dh even put it up waaaay high (like 6 feet, no joke) and in the middle of the night she climbed on our patio set to reach it. I told him that if it didn’t stop, she’d end up like Old Yeller: same ending, minus the rabies! Just kidding.
But we took her camping with us last week, and she was pretty good; stayed close, didn’t jump. On the last day we went to the river to play. She chased a hundred sticks into the river for hours. So she was exhausted! But she pulled a muscle and was limping. So when we got home, all she wanted to do was lay on her pillow and sleep for 2 days. She didn’t even really want to get up to eat. I told Dh, “THIS is the kind of dog I wish you would have gotten. She’s perfect!” I now know that the kind of dog I was meant to have is an elderly, broken dog that you can just strap a diaper on!!!!!!

You like dogs more than people because dogs are generally NICER than people. I have almost always had dogs. I’m allergic to cats, and honestly, they inspire no great affection in me. I think cats are creepy. They stare at you like they’re just waiting to eat your face if you should happen to die and there is no other food available. Yaaaaa!
I have 2 small dogs and we’re about to add a 3rd. My oldest is a pug/shih tzu mix. She’s adorable, sweet and smart as she can be. She’s 12 and we’ve had her since she was 7 weeks old. Our other dog is a full pekingnese. He’s is beautiful. Gorgeous really, but dumb as a box of rocks. He’s very sweet and loving, but not very bright.
The dog we’re about to add is actually my mom’s dog, that we gave to her about 3.5 years ago. She recently lost her other dog (also a gift from me-a beautiful black toy poodle) to brain cancer. It was awful. Her remaining dog has not eaten well, and been really depressed since he poodle died (he died mid-April). Ds has been spending a few weeks with my mom and stepdad and the dog has become crazy attached to him and started eating and playing again. He’s also abandoned my mom’s room in favor of sleeping with ds. She’s afraid when ds comes home he’ll stop eating again, so she asked me if I would take him. They als otravel a lot and it’s hard to kenel him all the time, especially now that he’s alone. He loves my dogs and they tolerate him. He’s a pure white maltese. He’s 5 years old, and fully grown weighs a whopping 4 lbs. Cute as a button.

I know exactly the dog you are talking about. My lab with arthritis from hip dysplaisia surgery from her younger days. She is a little LD as well. Bumps her head on the same piece of furniture daily….her favorite activity and hobby is deciding weather to sleep in her blue denim LL Bean Bed, or on her old blue had forever red quilt.
Your lab will calm down and you will adore it.
