The Changeling

Posted June 18, 2008 at 11:36 am by Tracy

So, we are in! The house is awesome, and I’m going to put an endless amount of pictures on my regular blog once I uh, find my digital camera. We still have 85% of our stuff to unpack, and per usual I am procrastinating. Remind me never to move, ever.

My daughter is handling the move well. She’s into the pool and loves swimming, she digs crawling on the grass and tapping sticks together for impromptu drumming. The dining room is sans furniture currently because we are apartment dwellers not accustomed to shit tons of space and she speed-crawls on the hardwood floors playing peek-a-boo behind the hideous curtains that haven’t been taken down yet. But all this aside, she has stopped napping.
Not 100% completely of course, since we got her to nap in the car on the way home from Homegoods, but other than that trying to get her to sleep in her pack and play, or our bed is a big huge happening AINT. She screams like we are murdering her, and I’m not the most patient person when it comes to irrational screaming and thrusting about. If she doesn’t nap, she is a grump, and when she’s a grump, she isn’t much fun. This morning she woke up extra extra early so due to exhaustion fell asleep but when the babysitter [aka my friend, who's an enormous help] rang the doorbell the dogs barking woke her up. Will she take a long afternoon nap? Probably not. Will I try? If I want to keep my sanity, no.

Maybe it’s just that refusing naps stage, where she would rather crawl around and demand 100% of my attention ALL day, or maybe she just swallowed some speed, we will never know. But really, really just watching her makes ME tired, so how is she not passing out mid-crawl?

I’m glad you’re all moved in! The sleep stuff has its ups and downs. She may very well get back into napping again once things settle down. Let’s hope she does! 10 months old and giving up a nap is a sad, sad thing. I’d still try to put her down, maybe try getting in the big bed with her and just telling her “shhh” and closing your eyes. My little one takes a long time to fall asleep, but once I can get her to quiet down and be still (by just telling her “shhh, be still” in a calming voice), then she will drift off after about ten minutes. Ten minutes seems like an eternity when you’re just lying there, but it’s well worth it.

I’ll tell you nicely as a friend, before all of the other nasty worry-warts nag the shit out of you: your comment at the end “But really, really just watching her makes ME tired, so how is she not passing out mid-crawl?” is going to spark a slew of comments like “Watch out for the new pool.” “She’ll fall in and drown” “Watch her. Watch the pool”.
Have fun in your new home! And before the comments start, think up a few sarcastic digs to combat the pool-nagging……

I often wonder if my son, 10 months old also, is a changeling also. I’m convinced evil fairies kidnapped him a few months ago and replaced him with this child who throws tantrums. At TEN MONTHS. Can’t wait for the terrible twos!

She will get back into her routine. You will probably after to let her cry….but don’t back down. Glad she loves the pool. have you planned on any mommy and me swim classes yet. At my pool, there is a woman who teaches only babies and toddlers. There was an 11 month old baby boy there a few days ago. He was AMAZING to watch. Of course, he is just too young to be freaked out when the instructor lets go of him while he is floating on his back. He floated a least 2 minutes unassisted. His little hands up by his ears…then she would scoop him up and under water he would go. Then with a tap on the head, HE would flip his chubby body over and float again. I hope you find a great class for you and your sweet baby!!!!

Paige loves the pool. It’s been chilly here in nature-ville but we snuck in the other day during a hot moment. I love the pool more I think, I’ve been swimming after she goes to bed regardless of temp

Oh, I watch her! I watch her as she crawls slowly towards the edge and I cackle all evil like.

    Awesome! :D
She’s too small now, but later you can do what my dad did with everything we encountered as kids: make up a ridiculously scary story to make us fear whatever it was we were thinking of doing.
