Eighteen is the new three

Posted May 9, 2008 at 12:17 pm by Tracy

I’m sure everyone knows about the Duggars; the family with seventeen kids? They had a show on Discovery [I believe]? Anyway, momma Duggar is pregnant again with her eighteenth kid. WHAT THE HELL? Is all I can think…And according to the article I read they will keep having kids as long as god lets them. My first thought was “whoa how do you have sex with seventeen kids around?” The youngest is nine months.

Now, I’ve got a problem with this. I’m sure I’ll get crapped on by the religious folk but I personally feel it’s not God’s Will for this woman to have a slew of children it’s her lack of birth control and some awesome eggs n’ sperm. God also gave us brains so we can control our cycles for those who think birth control is evil. I personally think popping out kids like it ain’t no thing especially with the state of our country is sort of demented. I think having eighteen kids is just as bad as someone who can’t afford to have more kids, having them one after another. Without the Discovery channel show, and donations would they be able to live in a 7,0000 square foot home? I don’t think so. And why should we have to donate, and pay for someone that doesn’t believe in birth control?

Do the children get all the attention they deserve? All the nurturing? It’s physically impossible for a mother to tend to seventeen children…do the older kids end up with the grunt of the child care, and house work? Is the mother REALLY happy that she’s been pregnant for 135 months in her life? Does she really think that god put her on this planet to give birth over, and over, and over again? Is that all woman are to do? Have sex, give birth, and mother children?

What are your thoughts?

I don’t how this woman’s uterus hasn’t fallen out yet. lol. I had problems having one child, I couldn’t bare to think of having 18!! I know they don’t believe in birth control but how about natural family planning at least!

What disturbs me about Michelle Duggar is not being “open to life” or “Quiverfull” or what have you but the fact that she weans her babies at only 6 months old so she can get pregnant again. If it were truly about doing what God intended, she’d continue to nurse until the child self-weans. And if that means she has fewer children spaced a bit further apart, so be it.

At least they are debt free…Look at all the people on wellfare that have huge families. I’m not saying it’s sane, but it is their choice.

Yes this is true, but they also get a good deal of money from having their own website and TV show I’m sure, and they’re sort of a novelty so they probably bank it, and get all sorts of donations.

I just wonder what’s going to happen to the children as they get older and possibly want to move out and live their own lives. Will they rebel? Will they they they missed out on their childhood (as opposed to other young adults in society)? Will they have their own identity? Thoughts?

I would like to believe that but I really can’t. They have to be given donations and such. He is a real estate agent. I did read something about “the fruit of a financial freedom seminar” that he attended years ago. Apparently it teaches and guides those to live financially on biblical principles.

Actually, all your questions can be answered on their website:

    http://www.duggarfamily.com/resources.html

It talks all about their religious and parenting philosophies and about their finances.

I really don’t care how many children they have. That’s their business. But, I am not thrilled with them preaching about their disciplinary style. They talk about “training” the babies to sit in a certain area, and they smack the babies with objects (rulers, wooden spoons, I can’t remember) to get the babies to learn to stay put. Quite a few other eyebrow raising tactics about how they teach their little kids to get with the program in that family.

And, if they just kept it to themselves, even that wouldn’t irritate me. But, it’s presented like–If we can do it anyone can, and here’s how!–and then they tell you to smack around your babies to get them to stay in a designated area. That’s the part that rubs me wrong.

Actually, I see they’ve removed that segment from their website. That was all the rave when she was pg with 17 (or maybe 16). They had a big part on their website where they went into detail about their disciplinary and “baby training” tactics. But, since I’ve taken time to poke around there this time, it’s gone. So, don’t quote me on any of that, since I can’t prove it was ever there.

But, if you Google: Michelle Duggar Blanket Training, you will see that I just didn’t make up this connection, and that blanket training IS as I described it and that Michelle Duggar has been a known practicer of it.

Well, *I’m* not debt free, so why would I judge them? If they have a little debt, then it’s certainly no worse than the people my kids go to school with who only have two kids but enormous houses and gas guzzling SUVs and whatnot.

The Duggars aren’t taking anything from anyone else. If people want to give them stuff, then oh well, that’s their choice. The kids seem well cared for and happy. It’s not how I would choose to live my life, but I support their right to live as they want to. I’m not real thrilled about baby-smacking, but at least they have taken it off their website, so they’re not encouraging others to do it. So, live and let live.

I find it funny since Jon and Kate get criticized more harshly then the Duggars and they both take donations.

I think J&K get a bad rap because they come off so greedy. I don’t see Mrs. Dugger trying to get a free boob job. Billy Joe Bob ,whatever his name, is not getting free hair plugs.

The two families come off so differently on TV because they are so different.

Plus, the Duggars aren’t as media-saturated as J&K.

Personally, 18 kids just isn’t for me! From what you see on TV they are happy with their lifestyle, and intentionally conceive each child. You don’t see much complaining from them and the kids seem pretty happy.

I don’t take issue with the Duggars, but I sure can’t comprehend it.

You are right that is in the perenting style not how many kids you have but I do think that the challanges that someome like the duggeres would face is different from someone from a family of two kids. For example someone from two kids are desensitize more and may be(or may not) be more street smart.

You know the stuff with the kids that got taken from that compound in Texas? I saw an interview with a woman that used to be married to the leader of that or someone involved in it and she said her ex-husband used to do that blanket training stuff with her babies. It’s abuse in my opinion. That lady got all her kids and left years ago, except the oldest daughter or son. Daughter I think.

And the older kids (Duggar kids, I mean now) do each have a younger kid they’re assigned to, basically to babysit them all day I think.
Really, it’s impossible to be able to give those children individual attention, or at least enough of it.
