Brilliant marketing or just cruel?

Posted May 3, 2008 at 12:00 pm by Allison J

I love watching the food network! I’m not much of a culinary Queen, so watching many of the shows gives me that cooking fix.

I especially love all of the challenges — extreme birthday cakes, character cakes, outrageous chocolate creations. I have no idea how they do it! Fascinating.

The other day I was watching the Ultimate Wedding Cake challenge — one lucky couple will choose from six cakes. The winning cake will be featured at their wedding, and the lucky chef wins $10k. Not bad!

So I’m watching the show. One cake, a six-tiered chocolate dream, will float above a sea of truffles and caramel. Another orange chiffon cake is being soaked in grand marnier then covered in a white chocolate ganache. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Then comes the commercial break… Weight Watchers! Come on! They were hawking their online program. I know people that swear by Weight Watchers. I’m not knocking it. But do you really need to interrupt one’s cake bliss with an ad for weight loss?

I prefer to watch my glutinous cooking shows in peace. White chocolate ganache, mascarpone cheese, truffles and all.

I know. I’m a food-network addict too. I love Paula Dean. And Rachel Ray. I do wonder though of the gluttony of a society that treats food so recreationally, you know? I mean, there are starving children everywhere and we have food contests.

I also wonder sometimes about how it feeds (ha, ha, ha) the obesity problem. I remember a few weeks ago we had just finished dinner and then were watching a Paula show we’d recorded and she made this monstrous egg and ham and cheese and butter thing and dh was like, “OK, what’ve we got around here that we can munch on.” And we had *just* eaten dinner.

Damn conscience! I still watch the shows and enjoy them, but those other things still nag at me a little bit, tainting my enjoyment, you know?

The thing I love about Paula is she is truly a no guilt kind of eater and cook. Bring on the butter, the fat…makes it soooo much better! I am glad I am not chubby….but if I was, I would prefer not to have any guilt about it, like Paula!!!

Love watching Paula Dean! Maybe it has something to do with her southern hospitality.

Unfortunately I can gain 5 pounds just by looking at pizza or donuts, so I’ve never actually brought any of her amazing recipes to fruition.

I am both a WW and a fan of the Food network, so basically I should probably have the screen name Glutton for Punishment LOL! My problem is the opposite of yours, late night commercials for Red Lobster, Burger King, Pizza Hut all kill me. The butt says no but the drool says oh yes! It’s a good thing that I can’t get any of it that late at night or I would eat so much crab I would grow claws :)

    Priceless!

I recently cut out carbs in the form of breads, pastas, chips, etc. That is really the only thing that works for me. Fresh veggies and proteins are my friends now. However, the other day I was in the grocery store and an employee was putting out fresh-baked donuts. I swear, I wanted to rip her arm off for a bite! I had to grab some green beans and hit the road!

You know what gets me are those deli roasted chickens, the smell drives me wild! I don’t know what it is but when they are cooking those in the store I have to run through and get to the till before I slip on my own drool!

Allison J, I commend you for cutting carbs. My vice is when the grocery store puts that basket of hot fresh breach by the checkout. I can usually smell it before I see it. I love bad, white, starchy carbs!!!!!

    Oops. Typo.
    I mean hot, fresh bread.

“Breach”? What the heck did I type?

Bring on the carbs! I would NOT have the willpower you do to not eat them! I too, love Food Network. I love watching Iron Chef. I loved the original version too. Loved when that guy bit into the bell pepper!
