Play time

Posted April 30, 2008 at 7:38 pm by Tracy

There’s a lot of fun stuff I want to do with my daughter. I’ve got an incredible [if I dare say so] book collection growing for her, and I want to do tons of crafts…in fact I go to Michaels about once a week and buy ribbon and Mod Podge and buttons for projects. Am I lame? Perhaps. And perhaps my daughter will want to play soccer and hate books and ribbon and weird buttons and I will be bummed but I guess I’ll be mommy goalie, or defense, anything her little heart desires.

But right now? Right now her interests include: putting things in her mouth, falling and hitting her head on things, crawling at record speeds around our home, getting stuck under coffee tables, putting the cat in headlocks, dog bones, and giving me heart attacks.  She can get into a good Touch and Feel book for 30 seconds at a time, and sometimes if I do funny voices and act-a-fool she’ll giggle. We went to the zoo and spent a good deal of time in front of the fish tanks We also enjoy shopping. Paige is perfectly content making goo goo eyes with strangers in the mall if it means I’m pushing her around all day and providing her with apple strawberry Gerber Stars and carrot juice.

But I got to let it out folks.

I don’t like playing with my daughter. Touch and Feel’s are cute but I can’t read “Zoo’s Who” over and over again without thinking about my email. I can only feign enthusiasm for the fish in the tank a few times before I realize I’d rather be reading the new novel I have sitting on my desk. I like to go to the park and feed the ducks but I don’t like watching my daughter like a hawk so she doesn’t put branches and bugs into her mouth. I feel horrible about this, really and truly. I want to be super mom and get psyched about everything. I want to crawl around the floor all day enthralled to be picking up dust bunnies before my daughter can get to them. In fact, I want to be the kind of mom that gets rid if dust bunnies before they even happen even with a dog, cat, and shag rug.

But I can’t.

And for the record, I’m really glad she’s sleeping, where’s my book?

How’s it derogatory? Ghetto can be used as a figure of speech. I guess you don’t know that![/quote]

You’re implying that there’s something wrong, negative, bad about Ghetto people in that context. You’re not using it as a praise (”That dress is gorgeous, it’s totally Ghetto!”), you’re using it as an insult, thus insulting people who live in Ghettos. See?

See how normal every day words can be worse than taboo words depending on context?

Praise?!?! You mean Phrase? I was using it as a figure of speech. Do you know what a figure of speech is? or do I have to pull out a 2nd grade text book to read it out to ya. You are implying that I used it in that context when you can clearly see that I did not! If you want to imply and make something out of nothing, then here you go: Why don’t you take your potty mouth to the Ghetto. Are you happy?

ANd there she goes…….Again, Granny, slow down your reading…I was making fun at your threats of “Leaving”….which you never do BTW….And actually I don’t feel like Prescott made me look stupid at all…if anything, I think it was the other way around. Oh, for cryin’ out loud. Do we have to bring these cat fights into every single blog post, which have nothing to do with John and Kate????

Seriously - if you can’t handle swear words, this is not the site for you. We ARE all adults here. Adults that use colorful language as a form of expression.

FYI Friend, this site was not created to cater to people who are offended by swear words. If people find this offensive, there are tons of sites where everything is ultra moderated and censored. I would suggest finding them.

The Imperfect Parent is not going to risk artistic or editorial integrity (and yes, freedom of expression and using words that colorfully express or evoke a response fall into that) in order to coddle those who prefer a homogenized, watered down version of parenting discussions.

If our home page doesn’t give it away, let me be perfectly clear — we are not your average “oh being a mommy is so hard” or “what diaper should I choose?” parenting site. We are here to [hopefully] ignite discussion and offer opinions that influence or encourage thought, enlightment, debate and discussion.

Oh, come on, it wouldn’t even be fair. Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not taking the bait. It would be a waste of words and time, because she didn’t even understand my use of the word “praise” in my previous post. I even gave an example of it in context. Anything I would say would just fly over her head.

It would be like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode, kicking all the little kids’ asses in kah-rah-tay class. God, I love Seinfeld.

I feel sorry for the author of this article…it was great by the way…and if your F bombs had any relevance that would be one thing, but to use them just because you CAN….diminishes you as an author and a woman.

You guys keep promising that, but you don’t actually do it. But, if you want to continue (God forbid) this argument about language, and ME, and language, then why not move your comments over to MY post ( which is actually about language), and leave this one alone? You can bicker your hearts out there.

Tracy I very much enjoyed your pause for thought. It was very candid and honest. I look forward to reading more of your written work. I too find myself drifting off when my kids are talking at times or longing for some mommy time when covered in finger paints. I think it’s completely natural to need that refueling and refocusing.

Everything to follow this great article, rubbish. I cannot believe that one post containing curse words and another blog conflict overtook the focus of this entire blog. Most unfortunate for Tracy and childish to boot. Definitely not what I was expecting to see on the tails of such a great piece.

    Agree with ya 100% Queen.
