The change to DST — was it worth it?

Posted November 1, 2007 at 9:44 am by Prescott

Now that we have Halloween out of our system (if not all the sugar), it’s time to reflect on the pressing issues of our modern age. That being, do you think the change to Daylight Savings Time was worth it? For those of you wondering yesterday, “isn’t it usually darker when we trick or treat?” it’s because the Gubmint pushed the date a week later that we turn our clocks back an hour, and moved up the date in the Spring when they go forward, all in a semi-quasi-pseudo effort to conserve energy (evidence that this helps is sorely lacking).

What this meant for parents is that our little ninjas and butterflies were roaming the streets in the daylight. In our village, where trick or treating cut off at 7 p.m., that meant a scant hour to haunt the darkness of night.

So what did you think of the change? Did you like it better being able to actually see the sidewalk, and feel more comfortable letting your older kids go out on their own? Or, like me, did you kind of miss roaming around under the streetlights, guided by the flicker of the jack ‘o lanterns?

Well, since you (Prescott), were on candy distributing duty while I took our ghouls out and about, I have to say, the weather and daylight hours made for one of the most memorable and fun Halloweens so far.

I loved not having to bring a flashlight and holding the younger ones hand while verbally directing him up dark stairs as the temperature drops with the diminishing sunlight.

Everybody seemed so much more comfortable and happy and it was fun to actually see all the costumes in full glory, not to mention, it’s just safer not having to cross the street at night.

I give the new DST a big thumbs up!!! Who cares if it saves energy or not, leave the darkness of night for the college parties.

It was OK. I got some nice pictures of my kids. Actually, I don’t know why we don’t trick-or-treat in the daylight anyway.

Back in my day (and no, I’m not talking about 40 years ago) the school bus would drop us off at the end of the school day, and my sibs and I, all decked out in our costumy wonder, would trick-or-treat all the way home just tossing it all in our back packs. We’d dump it on the table for my mom to see, she’d shove a PB&J in our mouths, and we were off in a flash to get more til about 9-ish (think NASCAR Pit Stop but with a bumblebee costume rather than a racecar). My mom has tons of pictures of us in costume with the sun not even set yet. We’d just get it all before dark even came. If someone wasn’t home from work yet, you just went to the next house. We meant business…..
