Jon and Kate plus 8

Posted October 29, 2007 at 1:13 pm by Jessica

If you haven’t caught an episode of TLC/Discovery Health’s “Jon and Kate plus 8“, it just may give you a little solace in the hardships of ones own parenting challenges. Jon (an IT Analysist) and Kate (a former nurse) Gosselin used in-vitro fertilization to help spawn 8 kids. One set are twins and the other six are from a subsequent litter.

Last season, I really liked the spunk coupled with the unconventional and imperfect parenting techniques used by Kate. Although she tended to run a tight ship, she was also human and threw political correctness to the wind when it came to the realities of having 6 toddlers and young twins only 4 years older than the sextuplets.

This season, I have to say, the reality parenting TV show has lost some of its charm with me. Although I enjoy, in a voyeuristic sort of way, watching parenting pained by temper tantrums and legal slavery by way of 6 more demanding children than I am left to deal with, I also have found Kate to be as bratty on occasion as her preschool broad.

In some ways Jon and Kate are very lucky. They have a cozy network of incredibly supportive family and friends who take and/or watch their children frequently. In the first couple of weeks of this season, I watched as Kate went to spa treatments, out to dinner with just her and her husband and plan a vacation by themselves in the Florida Keys. Personally, I know of very few 1.3 children families that are afforded so much free time as they are.

Another less than flattering observation I’ve made — Kate is not very nice to her husband Jon. While Jon is easy going and incredibly accommodating to his wifes idiosyncrasies, she is always snapping at him and making condescending remarks. Is it not enough that he spends all of his time at home helping with the children and goes to work on a daily basis to provide for his classroom of children and thus allowing Kate to be an “at-home mom”. Of course, I can’t imagine that 8 kids in childcare would be worth the effort of working outside of the home, but she always acts as if he is clueless and her life is so incredibly hard. Often times, she resorts to treating him like one of their toddlers.

One episode, Kate decided to hire a cleaning person. Through her exhaustive search, she finally settled on the one person who actually agreed to take the job on — so her prospects were limited. After the brave cleaning lady left, Kate then went around her house with imaginary white gloves, pointing out the hidden dust left behind. “Thanks for trying,” Kate said out loud, along with other rumbles of disappointment. The implication was that the cleaning woman was fired, not up to Kate’s high standards. Of course, you should get what you pay for, but cleaning after 6 toddlers and their bigger sisters, something is bound to get forgotten. Perhaps she should have cut the cleaning lady as much slack as she expects in return?

While Kate seems like a lot of fun and incredibly organized, it’s the little things — weird things — that seem to get her in a tizzy, like what shoes the older girls are going to wear to a carnival or if any of her family or friends puts her out by being one minute late. Sometimes you get the feeling that Kate is nothing more than a control freak, loving every challenge that comes her way, but at the same time, expecting others to reward her and recognize her for having it so tough, when in actuality, she really doesn’t. Sure, having 8 small children would drive the sanest person batty, it has also given them a much desired family and tv show. All in all, they have a pretty fortunate lifestyle.

As much as I like this show, I wish Kate would be less focused on herself and the indulgences of her children and complain less. Most families, even with less children, have their own unique challenges and have many other issues to deal with on top of it. Count your blessings Kate. You are not the first “over-worked” mother and you won’t be the last.

Oh come on… I find it very funny that so many people who live so FAR AWAY from the Gosselins, know so very much about them.

Just because you have a friend who’s friend knows Jon and Kate, doesn’t mean you are getting the REAL STORY, THE RIGHT STORY, or anything remotely close to what they are ACTUALLY like.

    Get a life.

    You’re jealous plain and simple.

Were the Sentmans the family with 17 kids who adopted the 2 puppies? They seemed nice, the kids wore normal clothes and seemed well adjusted. The Duggars on the other hand, I really get creeped out by them. The way each of the older kids is responsible for the daily caring for a younger sibling is wrong IMO. I would donate a hairdresser for Michelle if I could.

I watched the Dudders and The Sentmens last nite, I do like their show, and wish they could meet Kate

What do you suggest they do to squelch the hitting?

And, like I have said about everything else, they could squelch that behavior, too. It’s pretty obvious that a trip to the time out corner doesn’t seem to curtail that behavior.

I never noticed Kates shoes before. I have even had to learn to run in heels, Ive caught more than one train in a sprint with heels on :)I think her hair is cute, I do prefer it when she doesnt spike the back but its a cute cut. I dont get the references to her tattoos and nails, its not as if she has a tramp stamp.

I personally dont see anything wrong with Kate wearing heels! Who really cares what shes wearing on her feet? Isnt that being a little nit picky? C’mon…I have 3 kids, I do laundry, I do all the cooking, I do all the housework, bills, trash, raising of my kids and so on and Im tired and I still wear heels every now and then!

My comment regarding Kate and her heels, nails and tattoos was to point out contradictions. Kate goes on and on about how “practical” she is. IMO, having long nails and 4 inch heels. In my opinion, I think she looks better than ever. She has nice color, a nice figure and her hair is always colored nicely (more than I can say about mine right now……cant wait for my 12pm hair appt)…..Sometimes you can be beautiful on the outside but not so much on the inside. As far as her tattoos goes, when she had her tummy tuck, a tattoo was taken off with the portion of her belly. Who knows how many she actually has. It was my bad to stereotype Kate has a woman that wouldn’t have tattoos with her holier than thou attitude. I apologize. I am constantly telling my kids never to stereotype.
I could myself never wear heels, I never got used to them. In my field, I wear athletic shoes and when I put on heels to go out, the only thing I am thinking about is “I cant wait to get out of these shoes”. I just never got used to them, I grew up in a city of hills, steep hills and we live on a hill now. Has anyone tried walking downhill in high heels? Not so easy! More power to those of you that can wear them!

Andrea, yes it was the Sentmens who adopted those cute puppies, and did you notice that is was a family decision? and that they took their time to make that decision? boy did I ever spell the Duggers name wrong, Geepers!!!LOL, A just down to earth kinda family, very loving.

And also I agree that Michelle should have a hair dresser, but I truly believe it is their religion, as all the girls dress the same and have long hair, I”m sure it is the way they were raised, and one thing for sure, they have a lot of Love going on Huh? LOL

I remember living in suburban Chgo. and running thru the train station with heels on, and I to have long nails and they don’t stop me from doing any thing, I guess you just get used to it, and don’t even notice, I don’t think Kate will be wearing heels all day long,

As far as the G’S kids hitting, and screaming, well they are Kates kids and if it don’t bother her, I’m sure I can handle it for 20-30 minutes, or I won’t watch it. If my GK’s do some thing I don’t like, I can always go home.

…and I agree if she wore heels around the house it would be a hindrance to doing housework, etc but she was out shopping! My gosh, maybe she simply wanted to *dress up*

So what if she has a tattoo! Having a tattoo doesn’t prevent her from doing or not doing one darn thing, IMO.

Long nails..hate to say this, but I have never noticed her nails being excessively long.

I just don’t see the contradicitons.

As to Kate wearing high heels, on one of the episodes one of the twins was emphatically complaining bitterly that the shoes she was supposed to wear hurt her toes, and Kate was firmly telling her in effect to wear them anyway and that her own toes hurt her ALL THE TIME from her shoes. I was disgusted to hear anyone telling her little girl that it did not matter if her shoes hurt her feet, to wear them anyway. I feel sure that there were other shoes that the kid could have worn. It was like telling her daughter that she did not care if her feet hurt and did not care if it damaged the kid’s feet.

As for her hair, I still think it looks like a dog haircut in the front (some kind of mixed breed little terrier) and looks like a toilet brush in the back.

As for Alexis always needing to pee every time, as soon as they get in the car, for heaven’s sake, how many times does it take for Kate to learn to tell the kids to go to the bathroom, every time, right before they load up in the car. She is so proud of herself for planning ahead, well she dropped the ball on that one and still has not figured it out obviously. I always remembered to tell my kids to go pee before going in the car, or wished I had, when they were around that age. I cannot believe Kate cannot learn to remind the kids to go pee before they get in the car. IMO she likes to have something to go on and on about.

About Kate brushing kids’ hair brutally, there is a right way to comb knots out of long hair, and obviously Kate does not know how to do it, and by the way, I believe you can damage the hair follicles by pulling it out by the roots.

I am sure that Kate got her tatoo before she was married. So many college kids get tattooed while away from home (I told mine I would kill ‘em if they did) and once you do it, it is there for life! Ugh!

Speaking of the Duggers…the mom has beautiful skin, seems so sweet and is even very pretty if you can get past the hair. For this reason, I would love to see her with a cute hair cut. Maybe “What Not To Wear” could visit her and get her some updated clothes and a great new and easy haircut. She would be a doll. Oh wait…then she might fire ol’ Jim Bob up and they would have 10 more kids! Okay…now I see where she is coming from keeping that look she has going on.

I have never noticed Kate’s nails but I was creeped out by one of the twins nails. They were so long!! Saw them on a close up of a hermit crab on the 4th of July episode. The boys nails could not be any worse than that.

I love watching the Duggers! They seem like a real kind family with great values. However, they do have each child assigned to a younger sibling which in my mind is ok for a family that big but does probably take a little bit of time from them living a little of their own lives. JMO! People get upset that J&K ask the twins to help out with the tups but they dont do nearly as much as the Dugger kids do with their siblings. Which is fine, the Dugger kids are older then the G kids.

As far as Kates nails…again, I dont personally see that as being an issue. I used to have VERY long nails when my youngest was little. But now that I dont have time to get them done, or money to get them done, I havent had them in quite a while. However, I was so used to them that I could do ANYTHING with them with NO problems whatsoever! Cara having long nails on the other hand…I think its just a girly thing. My daughter, who is the same age, always wants her nails painted and looking great! She is in the process of trying to grow hers out so that they can be longer, not too long but longer. Im fine with her choice as long as she can keep them clean and take care of them properly.

Kates tattoos, hmm..well Ive only ever seen the one on her ankel, which if I had to guess she probably got when she was younger and didnt have kids. Although, I know plenty of moms with tattoos and some who even get them after theyve had their kids. I want to get one someday to represent all of my kids but dont have the money and honestly Im afraid of how much it will hurt so I dont know if I’ll ever get one. A friend of mine has tattoos like Kat Von-D on LA Ink! She is a wonderful very pretty lady and she has a daughter! Sterotypes are so easy to put on ppl, but really it shouldnt be done. Im guilty if doing it in the past and have always come to the conclusion that its neither right nor fair. So I try very hard to not do so.

Sorry this was so long! Have a great day everyone! I have to go get my oldest off the bus! Talk to you later tonight! :)

Mary Beth, that was cute, “What not to wear” LOL but really I think it’s her choice to dress that way, as fror her hair, I’d almost venture to guess ” There is no way a pair of scissors will ever touch that hair” I really believe (like my grandmother) it is their religion. My grand mother would turn in her grave if she could see how women dress today. Linda like when I was in high school, No jeans,no shorts, and no sleeveless tops, I to think Michelle is vert attractive, esp. with that many kids, I think they are a very loving family, and I’m so glad they got their new house done.

I agree with momof3 and you about tattoos, I know many women who have got them later in life, I think I’ve told this before to some of you, but I have one small cross, on my upper thigh, and believe me it was not worth the spanking I got for it, I let my cousin talk me into it, we were about 11 going on 20 ( so we thought) I did’nt think mom would mind us doing it, I mean after all it was about Jesus, Ummm, she did’nt see it that way, and I’ve never enjoyed it. My cousin, notta a word to her, she got away with it, It did’nt hurt that bad! but breaking my moms heart did. I never did any more, they are to final,

My grand daughter got one in boot camp, it is beautiful, 2 little blue birds, one with it’s wings folded,( rep: the mom) and one a little lower flying away, she said it was her leaving home, But I have only seen one on Kate.

    Good evening, Ladies!

Your discussion today about Kate’s tatoos reminded me of an article that was just in our local paper. It was titled, “Mommy Ink”, a play on the show “Miami Ink.” It showed several moms who had gotten their tatoos in tribute to their children…black and white portraits, their names and dates of birth. One I liked was a mom who had her child’s newborn baby footprints tatooed on her shoulder with the baby’s birthday underneath.

I agree that Kate was wearing heels to go out and look nice, not mop the kitchen floor or take out the trash. And wearing heels with your jeans is in style after all, as long as they are boot leg or wide leg pants and are long enough so you just let the toe of the shoe and a bit of the heel show. (Stacey and Clinton would be so proud!)

As far as insisting the girls wear their dress shoes…when I was a kid they only had one kind of dress shoe… UNCOMFORTABLE. But then ANY dress shoe is uncomfortable when you’re used to bare feet, sneakers and flip flops. So …if they’re the right size…you HAVE to wear them to break them in.

It is possible these days, I think, to get a more comfortable version of a girls’ dress shoe than the standard patent leather…am I right? (I have a boy, so I’m out of the loop.) If not, get used to it Cara and Mady! Beauty is pain! Big girls can’t be wimps and wear Jimmy Choo’s!!! LOL

I don’t mind Cara’s nails either, as long as they’re clean and she’s not scratching herself or her siblings. Probably wouldn’t let them get TOO long (if it were me, which it’s not) just to avoid the accidental scratches or having the nail tear off to the nail bed when playing around.

    Later chicas!

    luvs2sun:

Just responding to your post #14607

After she took somebody’s socks off, she threw them in the kitchen garbage can then picked them out. That’s when she said that she just can’t throw things away. When she was talking to Jodi on the phone, she said, “I was going to throw it (the bear) in the trash, but he howled, so I didn’t.” She contradicts herself again. First, she says she can’t bring herself to throw things away, then in the next breath, she’s tormenting her three-year-old son by telling him she’s going to throw his “buddy” in the trash. So, if she can’t bring herself to throw things away, then why would she say that? I guess that was my point. It is CRUEL to do that to children. That’s not just “teasing” either.

I also happened to catch a little bit of the episode again where they took Leah to Bounce U for her special day. That was the same episode where they took all the kids to Jodi’s for the day. It’s such a shame to hear Kate say, “We love Jodi. We moved to this particular area so we could be close to Kevin & Jodi. She loves the kids,” etc., etc., etc. What a change of heart that is compared to how she feels about her today! And how STUPID to ruin yet another family relationship over something so STUPID as gum on six little pairs of socks and a spot about the size of a nickel on a teddy bear!

I think Kate’s whole obsession with appearance, fashion, and footwear is totally insane. I feel sorry for all those kids when they go on all these outings that require lots of walking and all they have on their feet are flip flops or sandals and no socks. As I’ve said before, it’s no wonder they cry when they’re out in public being pulled along on a ring rope. My feet would hurt, too! I just don’t understand what’s wrong with good ol’ Nikes, Reeboks, or whatever brand, tennis shoes, or whatever you want to call them. Those little feet need support!

I agree about the fingernails, too. If you’ll notice, the girls have those long nails. The boys? Their “dirty, disgusting” (as Kate says) nails are always cut right down to the nub. As far as Kate goes, personally, if I had eight children and lamented all the time about how much they are struggling financially, I sure wouldn’t have my butt parked over at the spa once a week. I don’t know too many struggling mothers who can afford the luxury of a weekly/bi-weekly, or even monthly pedicure/manicure, and/or massage. Once in a while it’s a treat, but seems to me it’s a pretty regular happening with Kate. I don’t know. I guess I’ve always thought that you are supposed to put your children’s needs ahead of your own. I know my parents made lots of sacrifices for me when I was growing up. I know lots of parents today who sacrifice lots of things so their children can have something they want/need.
    ——————————————————————-
Patty - I don’t remember Kate telling Jody that she had no intention of throwing it away, if that was the case then that was downright mean of her. I thought she told Jody that she was going to throw it away but Collin cried so she didn’t. Gee, that was nice of you Kate!
Did anyone else notice the 4-5 inch heels she wore to the mall and restaurant? Whats up with Kate and high heels, freaky haircut, tattoos and long ass nails? I could never walk in heels, I would think it would be difficult seeing how Kate reminds us of how “practical” she is all the time. Spending hours doing the laundry must take a toll on her feet.

IMO, 6 or 7 is way too young to have nails that long. It is extremely painful when you bend them back by accident. It happened to me as I had long nails as a kid just like Cara. Playing 4 square at recess, I caught the ball wrong and it bent my nail back and the nail lifted off the bed and it bled like crazy. It was so painful. I didn’t learn my lesson and played volleyball with long nails and the same thing happened and I finally learned that long nails were not such a good idea for me. Cara can accidently poke one of her siblings or classmates, it’s not hard to do. If they get it in the eye, it can be extremely dangerous. Imagine rough housing with your siblings with those nails. I was thinking maybe Kate and Jon allow her to grow her nails out in the summer but she had them long during the episode where she learns piano and it was a school day.

Regarding Kate’s tattoos, if you remember the tummy tuck episode there was a tattoo on the portion of her belly that was removed. Her surgeon told her that she was going to lose the tattoo. I couldn’t tell what it was because her skin had stretched so much from her pregnancy with the tups.

I completely agree with you on the whole footwear thing with the kids. Thank you for noticing. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who notices that!

I also agree with you about having to use the bathroom once they’re in the seats and buckled in. I’m sure their house has more than one toilet in it. I would be sure they all went right before I sent them out the door. I still can’t figure out why they are four years old and still using potty chairs. What’s wrong with a little step stool in front of the regular toilet in the regular bathroom, so they can climb up there themselves? They could also wash their hands when they’re done, too! I find it difficult to believe that two grown adults can’t get four kids each to the toilet before they walk out the door. Maybe if they didn’t always have a sippy cup full of juice in their mouth, it would decrease their frequency of urination. I wonder if Kate has ever thought about that?

I forget who made the comment about the sippy cups and bibs. I could see wearing a bib or some covering if they had a special outfit on or it was a special occasion. But, to wear bibs at almost 5 years old on a daily basis is nuts. SO WHAT if they dribble something on their shirt. She acts like she does 400 loads of laundry every day. My friend with SEVEN children does laundry every day, too. She’s got lots of stains and spots to remove, but at least she lets her kids enjoy life!

Their teeth are going to be screwed up from sucking on those sippy cups all the time! Why couldn’t she buy a warehouse full of plastic/styrofoam cups (to go along with the 20,000 paper plates she says she buys) for them to drink out of if they want juice all day long? No extra glassware to wash - just toss them in the trash when you’re done. The juice is another thing. All that sugar, even if it is Juicy Juice, can’t be good for their teeth. And speaking of teeth, did you catch it in the “Mady’s special day” episode, when Kate was telling her to go back and brush her teeth, then she turned to Jon and said, “WE need to do a better job on her teeth at night.” That “we” crap (especially to another adult) is just SOOOOO condescending and demeaning. I’m sure by “we” she meant Jon because we all know he bathes everybody, puts them in their jammies, brushes their teeth, and puts them to bed. That guy can’t do anything right!

Lastly, in a previous e-mail, I mentioned something about squelching the hitting and somebody asked what I would suggest. I had another thought on the hitting since I wrote that post. When they were at Jodi’s, did you ever see any of Jodi’s kids hitting them or their own siblings? I don’t think so. That’s not to say that it wasn’t done when they were off cameera, but I think you get my point. The Gosselin kids are so aggressive because they see their mother constantly slapping their dad, so they must think it’s OK to hit anybody. Personally, I wouldn’t tolerate that behavior. It’s bad enough with 1-2 kids, and I can’t imagine what it must be like times 6 (or 8 if you include Mady & Cara).

If sending them to the corner really worked, the bad behavior wouldn’t continue. Like I said before…the monkey stops coming back for the pellet after getting smashed in the skull with a mallet after a few times.

To answer whoever asked me “what would I suggest?” Tell them not to hit their brothers/sisters! “We don’t hit anybody.” “We don’t do that in this house.” Give them one more chance, then send them to time out. Same thing with the biting. Although, it might be kind of hard to enforce the “we don’t hit in this house,” since their Mother is always smacking their Dad. As with anything, she has to be consistent. It may take several times before they catch on, but they will eventually. Little kids are smarter than they are given credit for sometimes.

I really wonder how they are going to do in school having to share everything with other kids, since they’ve never really been around other kids they aren’t related to. I wonder who will be the first one to get in trouble for pushing or hitting one of their classmates?

    Happy Labor Day weekend everybody!

What a circus, talking about Kate`s shoes? Funny…I never noticed her shoes untill she had those ugly crock`s on down south. Sorry but I have not saw shoes that ugly since the EARTH shoe in the 70`s!

Kate has a Winnie the Pooh on her ankle, I think she had it done on their honeymoon. Some of these posts sound like the same thing every time an episode is on! Please… heard it all before!

Grandma, running for the train? I lived downtown, close to rush street. My fingers are still frost bit. Gosh is that a cold city or what! Glad we where transferred out of there.

OH!!! You have Jimmy Choos?! Can we be BFF’S? LOL

I always wondered how people got away with “knock offs”. Isn’t that illegal?

There is a place in Derry New Hampshire that has TONS of fake purses. Coach, Dolce & Gabana, Prada, Kate Spade, Fendi, Gucci. You name it, it’s there. I must admit I have a few myself. However, if you keep an eye out, everyone once in awhile you will come across one that looks like the real deal! I’ve compared one of them to my real Coach & honest to God I can’t tell the difference.
    How do they do that?!

Stacy - A few years ago I bought a “knock off” Kate Spade messenger bag. My husband bought the real one for me after the knock off fell apart right before my eyes while at Disneyland. I think they can look very close to the real thing but the real ones are much higher in quality.

Help! - My daughter leaves for Boston in 6 hours! Can’t handle all this change, the baby is in high school and the daughter is going away to college……….time flies….enjoy your time with your babies!

All this talk of shoes and purses makes me want to go shopping!!

Well, if you haven’t seen the Gosselins’ NEW website, check it out. Kate answers viewer questions and there are A LOT of emails and stories from viewers posted there.

I’m glad they spoke out about the PERSONAL CHEF hype, explained how Craft Services caters (organic) for the crew, and the family, on busy filming days, but that, yes, Kate does still cook! Shocking!!!

Like I’ve said for months now….there’s ALWAYS two sides to a story. So many are so quick to judge on the slightest wisp of a rumor.

You don’t like the Gosselins? Fine. But the constant whining and harping and expounding about things based on “I read on this blog” or “I thought I heard somewhere” or “my cousin’s neighbor’s dog said she saw Kate at the spa” is just a waste of space.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day Weekend and that none of you are in Gustav’s path!!!

I agree Doodlebug. Craft services delivering meals on days that they are filming makes perfect sense to me!
