Jon and Kate plus 8

Posted October 29, 2007 at 1:13 pm by Jessica

If you haven’t caught an episode of TLC/Discovery Health’s “Jon and Kate plus 8“, it just may give you a little solace in the hardships of ones own parenting challenges. Jon (an IT Analysist) and Kate (a former nurse) Gosselin used in-vitro fertilization to help spawn 8 kids. One set are twins and the other six are from a subsequent litter.

Last season, I really liked the spunk coupled with the unconventional and imperfect parenting techniques used by Kate. Although she tended to run a tight ship, she was also human and threw political correctness to the wind when it came to the realities of having 6 toddlers and young twins only 4 years older than the sextuplets.

This season, I have to say, the reality parenting TV show has lost some of its charm with me. Although I enjoy, in a voyeuristic sort of way, watching parenting pained by temper tantrums and legal slavery by way of 6 more demanding children than I am left to deal with, I also have found Kate to be as bratty on occasion as her preschool broad.

In some ways Jon and Kate are very lucky. They have a cozy network of incredibly supportive family and friends who take and/or watch their children frequently. In the first couple of weeks of this season, I watched as Kate went to spa treatments, out to dinner with just her and her husband and plan a vacation by themselves in the Florida Keys. Personally, I know of very few 1.3 children families that are afforded so much free time as they are.

Another less than flattering observation I’ve made — Kate is not very nice to her husband Jon. While Jon is easy going and incredibly accommodating to his wifes idiosyncrasies, she is always snapping at him and making condescending remarks. Is it not enough that he spends all of his time at home helping with the children and goes to work on a daily basis to provide for his classroom of children and thus allowing Kate to be an “at-home mom”. Of course, I can’t imagine that 8 kids in childcare would be worth the effort of working outside of the home, but she always acts as if he is clueless and her life is so incredibly hard. Often times, she resorts to treating him like one of their toddlers.

One episode, Kate decided to hire a cleaning person. Through her exhaustive search, she finally settled on the one person who actually agreed to take the job on — so her prospects were limited. After the brave cleaning lady left, Kate then went around her house with imaginary white gloves, pointing out the hidden dust left behind. “Thanks for trying,” Kate said out loud, along with other rumbles of disappointment. The implication was that the cleaning woman was fired, not up to Kate’s high standards. Of course, you should get what you pay for, but cleaning after 6 toddlers and their bigger sisters, something is bound to get forgotten. Perhaps she should have cut the cleaning lady as much slack as she expects in return?

While Kate seems like a lot of fun and incredibly organized, it’s the little things — weird things — that seem to get her in a tizzy, like what shoes the older girls are going to wear to a carnival or if any of her family or friends puts her out by being one minute late. Sometimes you get the feeling that Kate is nothing more than a control freak, loving every challenge that comes her way, but at the same time, expecting others to reward her and recognize her for having it so tough, when in actuality, she really doesn’t. Sure, having 8 small children would drive the sanest person batty, it has also given them a much desired family and tv show. All in all, they have a pretty fortunate lifestyle.

As much as I like this show, I wish Kate would be less focused on herself and the indulgences of her children and complain less. Most families, even with less children, have their own unique challenges and have many other issues to deal with on top of it. Count your blessings Kate. You are not the first “over-worked” mother and you won’t be the last.

I love love love zucchini! Whenever I have too much zucchini(really can there be such a thing??) I slice them thin and place them on a baking sheet. I drizzle them with extra virgin olive oil and bake them for awhile until one side gets a nice color, then I flip them over and wait for the other side to get nice and brown. They get crispy and so yummy. Sometimes I just eat them like that as a snack but many times I toss them in some penne pasta, with shallots, tomatoes, garlic (also sauteed chicken when I want it) and top it with parmesan cheese. Its really good.

Have you thought about cutting it into chunks, adding pieces of avacado, stir in lime juice and a pinch of sugar? Some people add a little tomato to it…it’s super yummy! It’s nice and cool on the hot days. I know it’s cooling down in the northern part of the country…but I live in central Florida…we never cool down!

    Good luck!

    Hello, Ladies (Waving)

Stacey…try grilling it. Slice in half, score, sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic powder and brush with balsamic vinegar.
    Just grill until fork tender!

    Another one:

    Zucchini (chunked)
    half an onion (chopped)
    couple cloves garlic (smashed)
    salt, pepper
    fresh basil
    2 cans stewed tomatoes
    2 large potatoes (chunked)
    olive oil

saute onion, garlic, salt, pepper in a couple teas. of olive oil
add 2 cans stewed tomatoes and fresh or dry basil.
Cover and cook for about 15 minutes on medium
Add potatoes, cook another 15 minutes or so
Add zucchini and cook until it is fork tender.
Once everything is cooked, just simmer for about another half hr or so.
    * We like spicey, so I add a couple of yellow peppers, cut in half
    * Also, I use a potato masher to squish up the tomatoes but you can also use your hands :) trick from Rachel Ray!

I replied to Grandma’s above mentioned post sometime last night (Saturday night). I saw it posted there last night but can’t seem to find it anywhere today on either Imperfect Parent or Color Me Gosselin.

Could somebody please tell me why my post was removed?

Stacey my advice is to “put those extra zucs in a brown paper bag and leave them on your neighbors doorstep”!! There’s just so much you can do with zucs!!! :)

Hi all — we’re finally back after an apparent catastrophe at our host. They had to restore the database from a backup and I have no idea what point that “snapshot” was taken so if a comment you left earlier today is missing that’s probably why.

I got tears in my eyes when Leah fell under the water!!! OMG!!! My son almost drowned last year when he jumped into my friends pool! SCARY!!! I knew exactly how Kate felt! Swimming lessons are SOOOOOOOOOOO important! Glad to see that they got them some! :)

Mom, I was on the forum reading your post there, it was great, I left one for you to, I had a very simular experience last year about the same thing,

I also loved the show tonite, and I loved seeing Kate so involved with the kids, they did have fun, I thought Kate did good getting out of her comfort zone, Me I would be crazy with all those kids and PUDDIN, but they were at the right place for it,

And yes she was scared when the little one fell in, I know that fear to well to.

    good morning!

i loved the epi last nite.

the kids were A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!!! kate had a few cranky moments, but she did seem a bit more relaxed.

you how ppl critcize kate for EVERYTHING she does or doesn’t do. i’ve read many times about how ppl were so upset that kate didn’t do extra curricular activities such as swimming lessons with the kids. well, just as we say, you don’t see everything that goes on. kate clearly said last nite that mady and cara were going on their 3rd year of swimming lessons!

perfect example of what we DON’T see! maybe she is more artsy/crafty with the kids, maybe she does get down on the floor and play with them, maybe she does READ to them, maybe, maybe, maybe…we DON’T know for sure! :)

Where did everyone go? :? Anyone up for a J&K trivia night tonight? If so let me know!

Heres something for us all to do…list your favorite and least favorite parts of Mondays epi and something you wish you would see on the show or something fun that you think would be a good idea for the show. Happy typing! ;)

    Here are mine:

My favorite: Seeing the kids play with paint and painting with/eating the pudding! Too funny, cute and F U N!!! :)

My least favorite: Hearing Jon call one of the boys (Joel I think) a girl! Sooo not cool in my book!

Something I wish I would see: Them having a relaxed (and I MEAN relaxed) fun day at home. Anything goes! Except temper tantrums of course! ;) Sitting around in their jammies all day reading books to each other, playing games, eating stuff they dont usually eat and having a picnic in the living room with a fun movie! Now THAT would be a great epi in my opinion!

    Whos next?

  27. 14367. ambull said:
    August 20, 2008 @ 1:31 pm

    ok…let’s see!

my favorite: of course, i loved the messy activity.
also, when kate saw aaden outside on the patio and invited him in. “would you like to join our family little boy? and that’s how aaden joined our family.” she can be a hoot! i loved seeing the little ones in the pool and playing in the sand…

my least favorite: ITA with the joel comment, not even right. my BIL says that to my nephew sometimes and i HATE it :x
also, when kate was yelling at jon about putting the hose over the fence, i just cringed….here’s my thing CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES!

something i wish i would see: i, being the overly affectionate person i am, would LOVE to see more cuddling, kisses, hugs! i know we don’t see everything, but that’s one thing i’d love to see more of :)
