Jon and Kate plus 8

Posted October 29, 2007 at 1:13 pm by Jessica

If you haven’t caught an episode of TLC/Discovery Health’s “Jon and Kate plus 8“, it just may give you a little solace in the hardships of ones own parenting challenges. Jon (an IT Analysist) and Kate (a former nurse) Gosselin used in-vitro fertilization to help spawn 8 kids. One set are twins and the other six are from a subsequent litter.

Last season, I really liked the spunk coupled with the unconventional and imperfect parenting techniques used by Kate. Although she tended to run a tight ship, she was also human and threw political correctness to the wind when it came to the realities of having 6 toddlers and young twins only 4 years older than the sextuplets.

This season, I have to say, the reality parenting TV show has lost some of its charm with me. Although I enjoy, in a voyeuristic sort of way, watching parenting pained by temper tantrums and legal slavery by way of 6 more demanding children than I am left to deal with, I also have found Kate to be as bratty on occasion as her preschool broad.

In some ways Jon and Kate are very lucky. They have a cozy network of incredibly supportive family and friends who take and/or watch their children frequently. In the first couple of weeks of this season, I watched as Kate went to spa treatments, out to dinner with just her and her husband and plan a vacation by themselves in the Florida Keys. Personally, I know of very few 1.3 children families that are afforded so much free time as they are.

Another less than flattering observation I’ve made — Kate is not very nice to her husband Jon. While Jon is easy going and incredibly accommodating to his wifes idiosyncrasies, she is always snapping at him and making condescending remarks. Is it not enough that he spends all of his time at home helping with the children and goes to work on a daily basis to provide for his classroom of children and thus allowing Kate to be an “at-home mom”. Of course, I can’t imagine that 8 kids in childcare would be worth the effort of working outside of the home, but she always acts as if he is clueless and her life is so incredibly hard. Often times, she resorts to treating him like one of their toddlers.

One episode, Kate decided to hire a cleaning person. Through her exhaustive search, she finally settled on the one person who actually agreed to take the job on — so her prospects were limited. After the brave cleaning lady left, Kate then went around her house with imaginary white gloves, pointing out the hidden dust left behind. “Thanks for trying,” Kate said out loud, along with other rumbles of disappointment. The implication was that the cleaning woman was fired, not up to Kate’s high standards. Of course, you should get what you pay for, but cleaning after 6 toddlers and their bigger sisters, something is bound to get forgotten. Perhaps she should have cut the cleaning lady as much slack as she expects in return?

While Kate seems like a lot of fun and incredibly organized, it’s the little things — weird things — that seem to get her in a tizzy, like what shoes the older girls are going to wear to a carnival or if any of her family or friends puts her out by being one minute late. Sometimes you get the feeling that Kate is nothing more than a control freak, loving every challenge that comes her way, but at the same time, expecting others to reward her and recognize her for having it so tough, when in actuality, she really doesn’t. Sure, having 8 small children would drive the sanest person batty, it has also given them a much desired family and tv show. All in all, they have a pretty fortunate lifestyle.

As much as I like this show, I wish Kate would be less focused on herself and the indulgences of her children and complain less. Most families, even with less children, have their own unique challenges and have many other issues to deal with on top of it. Count your blessings Kate. You are not the first “over-worked” mother and you won’t be the last.

Way of topic, but I just got the shock of my life the afternoon….when the oldest boy got home from football practice, a lovely young girl was waiting on the front porch. Ok so far…nice, very pretty, but she had, how shall i put it??? Woman parts, is that delicate enough? When did girls his age start looking like that? It was enough to give me a heartattack!!!!!

Wow, What a shame this happened to the family!

Just trying to catch up…. The first thing that came to mind was Jodi`s sister running her mouth.
She kinda implied on her site that if something was not done for her sister, shit was going to hit the fan!

Do you think SHE wanted cash? Money is the root of all evil.

I agree, all families have their problems… I can’t stand my sister’s husband’s sister (HUH???) but I still don’t think I would set up a blog about her,I still do have to see her. I think (if it is truly Jodi’s sister) it was done for pure spite. JMO

Heather, how old is your son? And how old is the “little” ( ;) ) girl? Not to be TMI or anything but I developed WAY early! I NEVER looked my age! My parents and doctors even thought that I had tumors and stuff b/c I was growing up way too fast! Poor thing…Ive felt that pain of not looking your age! Thank goodness it stopped and now I look younger than I really am! ;)

I really hope that it isnt really Jodis sister. But from the looks of the pic she just added on her blog Im guessing it really is. Very sad!

Sorry if this posts twice - I submitted but it did not show up.
Okay - when I read “jealous bystanders, including family members” and “people are telling lies” - in my opinion, it is the same as name-calling - it is all just semantics.
I honestly feel if they have faith in their fans - which is who the message is directed towards, they do not need to address it. As evidenced here, their fans do not believe it anyway and they are not going to change anyone’s mind. It may end up doing them more harm than good because fans that visit the site and do not know about any controversy, are now seeking out the controversy to see what all the fuss is about.
MP3 - I was really not being hateful, I just needed clarification on what you posted and sorry for being the grammar police. Hope the doctor visits are nothing serious.
Ironically, I do NOT read the National Enquirer or pay any attention to it.
This kind of thing is really going to stir the pot here, on CMG and all of the other forums.
In all honesty, I don’t think anything in the NE article will hurt the TV show, but I do think TLC will have to address it one way or the other.
I think where the damage may show up is in the speaking engagement, IMO.

oh well…the good news of the pic was that for all the folks that complained that the gosselin’s didn’t go christmas caroling at aunt jodi’s…this pic was taken christmas 2007 in orlando at disney. there ya go ;)

    Nite ambull!

You are totally right Suz! Fame brings out all kinds… She Julie (jodi’s sister) may have been bitter all along. Plus I don’t feel bad for Jodi, didn’t she get to go on Oprah, and on the ski trip and to the spa? JMO..

Iowa, I watched that epi this morning too! My hubs even watched it with me! We laughed when Alexis had her little naptime incident b/c my youngest does that all the time! “Alexis Faith…Oh my Lordy be…” yep…thats the way I feel when I walk in after her nap and learn I have to change her sheets, clothes, diaper, etc and so on. YUCK!!! lol ;)

Heather, YEP! At the young age of 8 I was wearing training bras and had my first “friend” when I was only 9! Dont judge the poor girl! I know from personal experience how hard it is and how many parents will judge you based on what you look like…even though its not your fault! As far as what to do about your son dealing with this kind of stuff? I have NO idea! lol My kids are too little! But if I were you I would just ask if he has any questions that he needs answered by you or maybe your hubs if that would make him feel more comfortable. But kids these days seem to know a lot more than we think they do. Just tell him to respect that girl and not think that just b/c shes developed shes easy! Hope that helps! :?

Seems like all the kids look older than their age! What kills me is how the girls chase the boys around!

iowafan, that is my all time favorite epi! It`s something that Jon and Kate are on 2 times a day, plus all night wed. and the new show on Mon. It really tells us how popular this show is!

no worries here, bree. it actually took me a few minutes to find my mistake :). no, nothing serious…just checkups and allergist for new epi-pens and school notes….and dentists (yuck). i actually thought about it earlier. no way would i want to deal with all those appointments for 8 children!! 3 is enough to drive me crazy :)

Thanks for your advice….momof3..guess I need to chill, I have a long rode ahead of me! LOL!

In all fairness, I am sure that Kate rubs alot of people the wrong way, I in no way thinks she’s perfect but with that said, I do not think she or her family deserves to be constantly raked over the coals. Especially since she does things we have all done ourselves.

There is the old adage, there is no such thing as bad publicity, this way more people will tune in to see what all the fuss is about. TLC is probably loving it…JMO

Sarah, I agree with Heather when she says it was/is being done in pure spite b/c WHY would you go online and talk about ppl the way that she is doing it? This is a family that has their faults and they fully admit it.

I dont think everyone needs to bow down to Kate I just think it is EXTREMELY rude to go online with “inside” info and spread it around like wild fire! Theres no need for it. Everyone could see that Jodi was very nice to help out and good with the kids…why does she need to reinforce it? (Im having second thoughts now on Jodi really being as nice as she seemed on tv.) Her sister just ruined it for me!

    MP3 -
When I think back on the ER visits - stitches and broken bones - with just my one - I would probably lock 8 up in a rubber room!! LOL

Girls today are so much more brazen than years ago - I would have never dreamed of calling a boy (and my mom would not have let me!)when I was a teenager. My son is 14 and the phone never seems to stop ringing - and that is just the house phone - add to that the cell phones and text messages - boggles the mind.
We have friends with a son a year older than ours and we usually vacation with them. last summer, my friend actually had to speak with her son’s “girlfriend” about the amount of time he was spending on the phone with her during our vacation. And she was the one doing all the calling. It just doesn’t get any easier.

Is anyone else having problems with the blog? Its taking FOREVER for me to submit my posts! And this whole typing in your name and email thing is driving me nutso! I keep forgetting to do it! lol

The cupcake episode, remember when Kate said how much stress they where under? It was at the very start of the show. We all could tell she was not herself.. I wonder if this has been going on for awhile now?

It pains me to see a mother of 8 go through all the hateful blogs, then the NE.
