Jon and Kate plus 8
If you haven’t caught an episode of TLC/Discovery Health’s “Jon and Kate plus 8“, it just may give you a little solace in the hardships of ones own parenting challenges. Jon (an IT Analysist) and Kate (a former nurse) Gosselin used in-vitro fertilization to help spawn 8 kids. One set are twins and the other six are from a subsequent litter.
Last season, I really liked the spunk coupled with the unconventional and imperfect parenting techniques used by Kate. Although she tended to run a tight ship, she was also human and threw political correctness to the wind when it came to the realities of having 6 toddlers and young twins only 4 years older than the sextuplets.
This season, I have to say, the reality parenting TV show has lost some of its charm with me. Although I enjoy, in a voyeuristic sort of way, watching parenting pained by temper tantrums and legal slavery by way of 6 more demanding children than I am left to deal with, I also have found Kate to be as bratty on occasion as her preschool broad.
In some ways Jon and Kate are very lucky. They have a cozy network of incredibly supportive family and friends who take and/or watch their children frequently. In the first couple of weeks of this season, I watched as Kate went to spa treatments, out to dinner with just her and her husband and plan a vacation by themselves in the Florida Keys. Personally, I know of very few 1.3 children families that are afforded so much free time as they are.
Another less than flattering observation I’ve made — Kate is not very nice to her husband Jon. While Jon is easy going and incredibly accommodating to his wifes idiosyncrasies, she is always snapping at him and making condescending remarks. Is it not enough that he spends all of his time at home helping with the children and goes to work on a daily basis to provide for his classroom of children and thus allowing Kate to be an “at-home mom”. Of course, I can’t imagine that 8 kids in childcare would be worth the effort of working outside of the home, but she always acts as if he is clueless and her life is so incredibly hard. Often times, she resorts to treating him like one of their toddlers.
One episode, Kate decided to hire a cleaning person. Through her exhaustive search, she finally settled on the one person who actually agreed to take the job on — so her prospects were limited. After the brave cleaning lady left, Kate then went around her house with imaginary white gloves, pointing out the hidden dust left behind. “Thanks for trying,” Kate said out loud, along with other rumbles of disappointment. The implication was that the cleaning woman was fired, not up to Kate’s high standards. Of course, you should get what you pay for, but cleaning after 6 toddlers and their bigger sisters, something is bound to get forgotten. Perhaps she should have cut the cleaning lady as much slack as she expects in return?
While Kate seems like a lot of fun and incredibly organized, it’s the little things — weird things — that seem to get her in a tizzy, like what shoes the older girls are going to wear to a carnival or if any of her family or friends puts her out by being one minute late. Sometimes you get the feeling that Kate is nothing more than a control freak, loving every challenge that comes her way, but at the same time, expecting others to reward her and recognize her for having it so tough, when in actuality, she really doesn’t. Sure, having 8 small children would drive the sanest person batty, it has also given them a much desired family and tv show. All in all, they have a pretty fortunate lifestyle.
As much as I like this show, I wish Kate would be less focused on herself and the indulgences of her children and complain less. Most families, even with less children, have their own unique challenges and have many other issues to deal with on top of it. Count your blessings Kate. You are not the first “over-worked” mother and you won’t be the last.

While I was shocked by your use of the term “American” as being xenophobic if not racist, I laughed as I continued on to the end of your statement.
By “American” it seems you meant “white/Caucasian” but I could be wrong, you could mean any number of things actually. But Jon is only 1/2 Asian his father, the late Dr. Gosselin, was white. Kate said he was biracial during one of the episodes. That would make the kids 1/4 Asian descent and 3/4 European descent (if Kate is 100% European ancestry-only heard her comment on Jon’s ancestry not her own), the kids are not bi-racial. To folks that care they might describe the kids as multi-racial. I just think of them 100% cute.
well, I wasn’t using the term “American” to be
racist or xenophobic. When I look at Kate, I think white so I just said American. I probably should have just said Caucasian. Sorry to anyone who felt offended.

well, I wasn’t offended and I don’t see how anyone who read your statement could be as your statement speaks volumes about the writer more than it does anything else. Regardless of intent, you designated Kate’s features as “American”, when Jon is just as American as Kate, such a comparison as yours is inherently racialist.
Then, you continued with the comment:
” I would think that some or all would look more “American” and take after Kate. I thought that when there was a biracial pregnancy, the kids usually took on more characteristics of the mom”
I just had to laugh, because that statement has got to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! Nothing in that statement for me or anyone else to be offended by. I don’t know where you learned that but seriously, you yourself might want to pick up a jr. high school Civic and/ or Biology textbook.

Thanks Mary. I don’t know who made you school principal of this blog. I am sure most people who read my statement KNEW I was really meaning “white” when I wrote American. And Although Jon is American, I have heard viewers of the show refer to him as “Korean” or “Chinese” instead of American. Maybe you should contact them to slap them on the wrist.
Should I go to the blackboard now and write “I undertand the definition of American” 100 times??

I would like to jump in here. I am so tired of so many people getting so huffy and easily offended anytime any reference is made to color or race. I believe in calling a spade a spade or whatever else. Almost every race or nationality down through history has at one time or other endured everything from slurs and sneers to downright mayhem from another group of people. I feel that no slight was intended by the person who mentioned anything about race or whatever she said. I agree with wondering about that very thing. To me it is a fascinating thing. They are certainly beautiful smart children. I read somewhere that children with mixed nationalities are often more healthy than the general population and even usually better looking. I wonder if the fact that most of the Asian races are purer races, stock or nationalities (or whatever you want to call it) than our own mixed lot of gene pools, and may be stronger for that reason, accounting for the seeming dominance of Asian features. The Asian races certainly seem to excel in intelligence. I have long been fascinated by what people inherit, what is inborn and what is learned by teaching or simply copying. Now having said that, I hope I did not offend or anger anyone.

Attn “I Have a Life” - please go back and re-read my post. I NEVER said the children are freaks - I am a genuine advocate of those children and in no way, shape or form want them to be seen as or feel like freaks. My post stated that the only one turning them into freaks is their mother for subjecting them to this side-show circus life. A good hobby for you might be night school where you can start with Reading Comprehension if you are going to continue to post (which you say you are not).
Honestly, I believe some of you actually worship and idolize Kate. Those of us that do not like her will be fine - her behavior will never let us down and will continue to validate our opinion of her. I worry for some of you - when Jon leaves her or someone from her family writes a tell-all book, you are in danger of melting down - I expect to see some of you on YouTube, like that guy that was on their defending Brittney Spears. Anyone see that?
First, learn how to spell Britney, thought I’d point that out because you always seem to point out everything, even if you don’t have any idea what your talking about.. and yes you did say they were a freak show, so that means you call them freaks. I do like Kate, but sweetie, I am not in danger of “melting down” In the future, why don’t you just try being a little less judgemental about Kate and about the people posting, no one is perfect, except for you.. Everyone can have their opinion, and in my opinion you seem to think that your opinion is the only right one.
Hehe…. you know I notice an ongoing theme on the Jon & Kate boards on the web.
There is one particular poster who has all these traits in common:
1. He/She/It HATES Kate. That’s a given. That’s pretty easy.
2. He/She/It never knows what it’s talking about.
3. He/She/It refers to him/her/itself as a “perfect parent”… often comparing how great his/her/it’s kids came up, in comparison to how Kate is raising hers
4. He/She/It is forever correcting people, over the dumbest things… as if he/her/itself is sooooo perfect
5. He/She/It constantly goes after people, picks on them, singles them out…. in an attempt to start an arguement
6. He/She/It loves Jon
7. He/She/It has gone so far as to insult the kids and how far they are coming along in their speech and whatnot
I believe this person goes by the name “Prwins” at the Discovery Health message board.
I think there is a good possibility this person frequents all the major Jon and Kate discussions on the web, because I always see this consistant personality.
I used to post on the Discovery Health board, but this user completely ruined it for me. This person can’t let a day go by without slamming Kate and/or picking on other posters. And the mods over at Discovery Health just let it slide. And yet one day, someone at the Discovery Health board DARED start up a thread slammming “Prwins”… and the moderator shut her down and closed her thread almost immediately… which leads me to believe the mods over at Discovery Health are not fans of the show, they were probably just assigned to look after that board and nothing more.
I believe this “Prwins” person also frequented YouTube.com for a while, leaving childish comments about the videos that fans were making. The personality mirrored “Prwins” to a tee, but was about twice as childish… probably because he/she/it assumed he/she/it was doing a good job hiding.
Yeah, big-time Jon and Kate troll.
If you see this personality at any of the major Jon and Kate boards, I’m willing to be a lot of money it’s the same person. This foul, EXTREMELY disturbed and insecure personality is coming very distinct.

Shyla,
This is the individual I referred to in a previous post. Thankfully after our exchanges he has not come back.Though I suppose he could be hiding under a new name on this site. He picked on a lady who posted here who shared she had seven kids in a short time and had some reality t.v. bit that was going to air. After reading his abusive posts to this women I had some out of character rage set in and told him I thought he was a “punk,” and then some. Definitely not my best moments, LOL but his comments really angered me. I guess he moved on to sites where he can fly under the radar.

Oh…Ok, I guess if your self-inflicted martyrdom gets you somewhere…then its your right to claim it, but frankly you once again have lost me.
I am not principal of this or any board nor do I slap people’s wrist. I was not angry nor offended as you and Sally want to proclaim. I was what I stated, laughing at your remarks.
It is 2008 Maureen, I find it unfathomable that you actually think that bi-racial babies take after their mother more than their father? It is basic genetics, covered in junior high school biology. Bi-racial babies fall under the same genetic laws that all babies follow not moreso mother’s than anyone else. I also pointed out the Gosselin multiples are not bi-racial. And, I pointed out that Jon Gosselin is American. I did not KNOW that you meant American=white, which is why I asked if that was possibly what you meant.
Your defense that such a statement is not racially informed was that others KNEW that you meant white when you wrote American does not make the comment less racial. I don’t disagree that others think like you do. I do disagree that when you make such statements in a public forum, that someone who thinks, as I do, does not have the right to post how ridiculously illogical your statements are as well. It may make you more comfortable to share your opion with others whow believe that American=white or that biracial babies take after their mothers. So if my laughing at your “logic” makes you uncomfortable, well, I can’t help that I did encourage you to think about what you said and in fact to learn a bit about genetics and American Civics.
That is all I said, and that is all I meant. Sally, I don’t even think you read my comment because the tangent that you went off on had nothing to do with what I wrote but seemed to offer a chance for you to sound off with people who disagree that American=white only. Your spade/spade comment was quite irrelevant, still you continued about how tired you were and pointed to things that had nothing to do with what I said. If only you actually paid attention to what you think as much as you do to what I think.
But really, where does it get you to ignore what you say and think? Apparently the 1880s Chinese Exclusion Act–in case you don’t remember– Cliff Notes version: Give me your tired, your poor, your hungry, but not your yellow! Along with the the Ozawa v US and US v Thind Supreme Court rulings of 1922, the widespread interrment of Americans of Japanese descent and lack of such requirements of those of German or Italian descent in WWII and the numerous laws instigated by the Asiatic Exclusion Leaugue for most of the 20th Century informs the statement of Maureen’s opnion when she compared Jon and Kate as Asian versus American. And, as I stated, intentional or not the comparison is inherently racialist and actually no more logical than Maureen’s writing that she always thought biracial babies take after the mother’s features more than the father’s. My statements were intented to encourage thinking and if I offended you by doing this, so be it.

Thanks Mary. You inspired me to search for a validation of my theory that simply having more Asian ancestors in a person’s gene pool might have something to do with most of the offspring appearing Asian. I found much interesting reading in a Google search including the quote below -
(Please note the author’s use of the term PURE-BRED Chinese and Japanese; and yes, I realize that Jon is only 1/2 Korean, but that still contributes a long line of Asian ancestry. Please note that this book was also written before race or skin color became such a controversial item of discussion) Anyway I will continue in my quest for information about what I posted about. Very interesting reading.)
(A quote from a book by *Koestler, Arthur 1976: The Thirteenth Tribe
Hutchinson & Co., London ISBN 0-09-125550-3)
*viii RACE AND MYTH
The cast of countenance changes very easily under a change of social environment. I have noted such a rapid change among immigrants to the United States…. The new physiognomy is best noted when some of these immigrants return to their native homes…. This fact offers excellent proof that the social elements in which a man moves exercise a profound influence on his physical features.’Ilo The proverbial melting-pot seems to be producing an American physiognomy - a more or less standardized phenotype emerging from a wide variety of genotypes.
Even the pure-bred Chinese and Japanese of the States seem to be affected by the process to some extent. At any rate, one can often recognize an American face at a glance’, regardless of dress and speech, and regardless of its owner’s Italian, Polish or German ancestry.
Emerson wrote in his essay ‘English Traits’: ‘Every religious sect has its physiognomy. The Methodists have acquired a face, the Quakers a face, the nuns a face. An Englishman will point out a dissenter by his manners. Trades and professions carve their own lines on faces and forms.’

So, go Googling and have fun.

I’ve seen It refer to Itself as a woman, too. On YouTube, It behaves like a childish man. And I made some comment referring to It as a man…. and It said something along the lines of “my husband.” (hahaha…)
If It IS a woman, that’s even MORE sad, in a way. And checking out the person’s YouTube homepage, It’s got some of it’s own videos posted, but it’s just stuff like their fireplace, etc. haha It has NO videos of Itself.
This leads me to believe this person is a complete hypocrite, and for all the judging It does of Kate… if we filmed IT’s life, people would have a heyday… and IT knows it.
I know… the person’s provoked a lot of less-than-attractive replies from me also.

One more thing I would like to add. I have great admiration for all the Asian races. I think they are a much older civilization than ours (meaning I think they have been civilized longer), that on the average or as a whole, their children are more intelligent than most races, that their art is beautiful, their people are beautiful and I am sure that I did not post otherwise anywhere. If you think I was being racist, you misunderstood my wording. I am convinced, and will try to no longer publicly say anything about race, color or creed. May you all be blessed.

PS: My post #401 was in answer to Mary’s comment in which she thought I was being racist against Asians. I have always admired and loved reading about all of the Asian races. I love their art, their literature, their people are beautiful, and I believe that their civilization is much older than ours (meaning simply that they have been civilized much longer), and that their children are incredibly intelligent; so somehow my wording was misconstrued. I would say much more, but evidently the more that is said, the more fuel for the fire, and evidently I struck a tender spot with my comments.

I am so happy to see that there is a peace maker on this site (you); it definatly needs one from time to time. I applaud you for making such efforts to help make peace. Thank you for your nice comments. You seem like a great person.
I will, as I always do, watch the show tonight and I will probably come back here to view the comments although I probably won’t make any comments b/c people seem to read too much into comments and get defensive, and I won’t lie I have got a little defensive about some of the things that people write about the couple and their children. So if at some point I have offended anyone, I apologize. I will say though that I think Jon and Kate are wonderful and I’m so excited to watch the show tonight to watch their much deserved night out without the kiddos.

Someone said “No one really knows what Kate is really like . . .” Well I disagree. I think you are pretty much what you sound like and act like. She has a choice in how she responds to anything. Maybe she is subconsciously copying someone else’s personality, but everyone has more than one hero in their life to try to pattern their behavior after. I think that a lot of a person’s personality is inborn, but some of it is copied.
I think the reason there is so much heated argument on this blog site is that the show brings out strong feelings in two very opposite personality types - the ones with empathy, nurturing dispositions and good manners, and the ones that are very rude, bossy, impatient, self-centered people. It can be very hard to stay silent about an injustice. Sure it is none of my business how Kate treats her children, but I can still give my opinion, or is it going to be decided that everyone can be as good or as bad, as polite or as rude, as they wish and no one is supposed to notice any difference or at least not mention it. We are all different and thank heavens no amount of ignoring any differences, or not mentioning them, will make all of us alike. Sure, Kate does not have a lot of time to herself, but that is not Jon’s or the children’s fault. Someday when the kids are all grown, she will probably have all of her time to herself.

Dear Katie, While I don’t know you personally I thought I would give you a little food for thought.
1. Treat your husband with respect. HEEEELLO Kate he is a person just like you.
2. Stop complaining about having 8 children. You made this choice and its time to suck it up.
3. The state of PA or any other tax payers should not be “expected” to support your family or your children. When you had Your children that became YOUR responsibility.
4. I think you should count your blessings. Remember you have friends and babysitters around the clock which allows you to scrub your kitchen floor 3 times a day and go to the spa.
5. Get a life Kate.
Have a great day!

I posted this on Discovery Health website today, Lets see how long they keep it up:
Dear Discovery Channel,
Before you decided to start Jon and Kate + 8 did you do major research and chat with Child Psychologists and Adult Psychologists on the effect this show will have on the kids later on?
Alot of people watch the show because Kate is nasty to Jon and they want to see what she does next…This pretty much has become the focal point of the show (aside from the kids cuteness) do you think this is healthy for the family?
If you have consulted child psychologists what do they say about the fact that MOST of the show ignores the twins? What do they say about Kate IGNORING Mady? Shes NOT a whiner or brat, she NEEDS LOVE AND ATTENTION KATE!
If you dont show Mady love and attention NOW, she will find other people to give it to her.
Kate is obviously a Narcissist, not a malignant “N”, but an “N” nevertheless. Why do you even AIR her nasty comments to JON? The children watch videos of the show. Psychologically this is harmful to see the way their mom treats dad. Is there anything being done to stop this? Has anyone pulled her aside and said, “Hey, be nicer to Jon, you arent looking good on TV”
I understand that now there is PRODUCT PLACEMENT on J&K+8 Juicy Juice etc… This is making the FAMILY a PRODUCT and is UNHEALTHY… Do you realize that you are making them another DIONNE QUINTS…
Did anyone in your planning office stop to remember what it was like when YOU were a Tween and the teasing youd get? Did you even consider the teasing the kids will get with the potty training pictures?
Is it true that you paid for their house, all the trips, free laundry service etc etc etc?
Dr Phil gave her free nanny service… Gap Kids FREE clothes.
I understand that a book and cookbook and pancake mix is in the works. If Kate gets EVERYTHING for FREE and has a FREE NANNY and FREE HOUSE and FREE LAUNDRY SERVICE how can SHE and YOU market her as the SUPERMOM? ANYONE with all that free stuff can be a SUPERMOM.
The difference with MOST average “SUPERMOMS” is they dont EXPLOIT their kids to get Narcissistic Supply like Kate…
Please ask the good hearted people of Reading, Pa how far Kate will go for ATTENTION and ENTITLEMENTS.
Alot of us are predicting that when the kids turn 5 that Kate will SUDDENLY decide to Home School them to keep the show going so she can still get her beloved attention…PLEASE dont give into her. Let these kids have PRIVACY and PRIVATE LIVES…
THEY ARENT ZOO ANIMALS! They are living, breathing PEOPLE…
DO the right thing…

There is a similar recipe to what Kate made last night on the Chex cereal box. It is called “muddy buddies” and it sounds like what she makes. I have made it and it is pretty good-and now they have chocolate Chex mix that you can use.
