What time is it??
It’s pahhhhttty time! And also time to make the Disney Company even richer.
Because kids are growing up way too fast these days, our 4- and 9-year-olds are joining the ranks of crying, love-sick tween girls in anticipation of High School Musical 2, debuting tomorrow on Disney Channel.
It’s hard to believe there is any money out there that Disney doesn’t already have, but you have to give credit where credit is due — they know how to pick attractive theater geeks and write catchy tunes, combined with blitz marketing schemes that span their many TV shows and turn robotic teens with mediocre singing and acting skills into franchise juggernauts.
If you haven’t heard that Corbin Bleu has, like, the coolest hair and that Zac Efron is dreamy, then your kids are too little to be in the know or too old to be so dorky. I cannot escape the dorkiness however, so our Tivo is set.

The cast of “HSM: 2″ gaying it up
If you don’t believe me, chew on these stats:
7 million: Dollars budgeted for “High School Musical 2″ (the original was made for $4.2 million).
2,000: U.S. schools and community theaters that have licensed to do “HSM” stage productions.
100 +:Countries in which “HSM” has been televised.
42: Cities visited on the sold-out “HSM” concert tour.
18: Age of Corbin Bleu, the youngest member of the cast.
9: New songs featured in the sequel.
2: Emmy Awards won by “HSM” (best children’s program and best choreography).
1: The ranking held by the “HSM” soundtrack in album sales for 2006 (3.7 million units sold).
Please don’t tell me I’m alone in having to listen to this crap, at least in the background while I write blog posts.

Part of me says “Thank God my kids are too young for this.” Then reason tells me “Yeah, but just wait ’til they’re older and into something even more annoying.” Could any one of us have even imagined kids would think a musical (GASP!) would be the coolest thing EVER!!??

When we were at Disney World last month (where we fed the Disny money machine) we discovered that they do a HSM Pep Rally about 800 times a day at MGM Studios. There were “kids” dressed up as cheerleaders, basketball players, geeks, etc on a big float holding up signs and doing a cheer and blah, blah, blah. It was terribly annoying. Ds, who’s 5th b-day we were there to celebrate, smacked himself on the head every time we saw them and asked what was wrong with them and why were cheering. Seriously, every time we saw them coming, we’d run the other way to keep from getting trapped by their mondo float. There was about a gajillion kids around them though (both boys and girls) who knew very move to the cheer and sang right along with them. I’m sure it won’t be long before ds is into something equally annoying and I’ll be drinking..er..sighing until the phase is over.

OK, so my kids (6 and
were with The Ex last night and this weekend, and I still watched the first scenes of the movie without them in the house. How dorky was that?! I thought the first number was kind of catchy, and, frankly, I couldn’t stop marveling at how energetic 17 year-olds are. Was I that bouncy at 17? I don’t think so. (I was thinking this laying on the couch.)
My ex let the kids stay up to watch the movie premiere, but I didn’t mind. Although annoying, it still seems fairly innocuous compared to other things out there. Besides, I’m still holding the purse strings, so no Teen Beat Zac or Corbin posters yet.

Hey, not sure why there is a smiley face where I put 8/eight. This Internet stuff is so strange.
