Placenta eating moms cry victimization
Julie Deardorph at the Chicago Tribune reports on a mother in Nevada, Anne Swanson, who threw a boo-hoo fit after giving birth because her hospital wouldn’t allow her to eat her placenta.
Deardorph is feelin’ Swanson’s pain — although she claims she wouldn’t do it, she thinks mothers ought to be able to eat their own organs:
Mother goats do it. Rats do it.
Yeah, and dogs eat their own shit too. Other animals also eat each other. What’s your point?
(It’s always The Man trying to prevent woman from eating their own organs! Damn them!!)
But I do think if you want your placenta, for whatever reason, you should be able to have it. There are no laws barring hospitals from providing placentas to patients and if she doesn’t have HIV or hepatitis, what’s the risk? Meanwhile, we let people put more troubling things in their mouths every day, including cigarettes and hot dogs.
So let’s understand the logic — Deardorph demands rights for people to eat their own organs based on the fact that people eat hot dogs?
Perhaps Ms. Placenta Rights is not in the know…there is a reason why hospitals have hazardous waste systems in which blood, organs and other bodily fluids are thrown out in regulated form, with regulated procedure. It’s a public health issue. You cannot allow people to just take home the organs of their choice, to cuddle with it at night or to feed it to their families. Disease can spread rapidly. Organs are contaminated and when not transported correctly, can potentially be a threat as bacteria grows.
Apparently, Hawaii does have a law that releases placentas to mothers for religious reasons, although perhaps it is still illegal to release it for purposes of ingesting it (how they would determine the end purpose, who knows). All I can say is thankfully Hawaii is separated from the mainland by a vast amount of ocean.

Eeeew!!!! Remember that part in The Coneheads movie when the doc asked Beldar if he wanted to cut the cord, and he smiled with his teeth showing, and then you heard a loud “chomp” sound?

Why would you want to eat it? I can’t wrap my mind around this.

Lots of mom’s in Ca have brought their placentas home for ingestion and planting!!
Yes, the placenta can be dried and then placed in capsules. I’ve heard stories of people sauteeing up onions and garlic for the placenta stir fry just as mama starts a pushing!! Apparently, it’s chock full of nutrients that are good for the nursing mom! For me, no thanks! I know someone that is 10 yrs old now and her placenta is still sitting in her mother’s freezer! Ok, ewwwwwwwwww!
Also, when I was a kid, my mother had her gall stones removed and the surgeon let me keep them! I still have them! They’ve given me hours of practical joking, investigation, and other fun!

That’s right, Paul. If you’re not a Midwestern, white, formula feeding middle-to-upper class republican, we don’t want you here.
Give it a rest.

Ha! Slightly overcooking my steak gives me more fits than you do, Paul.
Now go back to reading Department of Labor regulations like a good boy. Do the senior partners know you’re wasting time commenting on silly parenting blogs?

Well, it does belong to her, doesn’t it? It is gross, but if she homebirthed, then she’d be able to do whatever she wanted with it, right?
You know what irritates me though? X-rays. They’re pictures of MY body that *I* pay for, but they don’t let me take them home! You have to get them released to another medical facility.
I have heard of people bringing gallstones home. And tonsils. I’ve known of a few kids who were given their tonsils in little jars to take home and bring to school for show and tell.

Petulant Pixie, I do actually agree with you on this one, (not that I would ever try this crap)although I feel if she REALLY wanted it, she should have checked with the hospital prior to birth and if they said no, then she should have gone through a homebirth.
And I agree with you on the x-rays. The hospital took an EKG (I think) of my son’s heart and they printed out a digital image of it to let him take home. He was thrilled!!!!! He showed everyone.
Oh, and once, my dad had passed a horrible kidney stone right before my wedding. I was in his kitchen eating lunch and he brought it downstairs to show me. I was mid-bite and he had a little glass jar an was jingling real close to me. I said “What, did another tooth fall out?” He said no, remember I passed that damn stone the other day? Here it is.”
GAG! COUGH! CHOKE! HACK!

I don’t want to repeat all the ewwwwww, ewwwww, ewwwws above, so I’ll just say: Oh. My. God.
I’m sorry not to be open-minded on this one, but don’t vitamins and, like, soybeans and broccoli provide nutrients to nursing moms? Wouldn’t sundried tomatoes be better with pasta?
Ditto, ditto, ditto to all the other ewws…and the gag, choke, hack, too.

Why didn’t they just give her the goddamn placenta? It was hers wasn’t it? The hospital should be glad to have one less item for the old bio hazard waste pile. They should give you a discount for taking your placenta with you.
.
I kept mine, but I’m not saying what I did with it

Well, I can see both sides of it. If a woman wants to eat her placenta, she’s an adult and should be able to do so.
I think the concern is that organs are highly contaminated and can spread disease. Also, I think many view it as a social taboo (like cannibalism).
Even in Hawaii, where it is legal to release a placenta from a hospital, it has to be tested first so that it’s not shown to be an HIV or hepatitis carrier.

I’d like to have my own kidney removed so I can take it home and fry it up with some Chianti and Fava Beans!
