As a teacher, I always get nervous when someone suggests firing a teacher for something that they do in their "real" life. Our country has always tried to hold teachers to higher "moral" standards than "regular" people- heck, in 1912, teachers weren't even allowed to date! (And if they got married, they were fired- and that's legal!) I work in the summers at a Renaissance Faire, which some people could suggest is improper. Should I be not allowed to teach for doing something like that? I say- as long as it doesn't impede my ability to teach, I'm not telling stories and encouraging the children to participate in "immoral" behavior, and it isn't illegal- the public doesn't have the right to tell me not to do it.

From all the stories I have read this just sounds like a witch hunt cooked up by some ladies unhappy about the schools choice of pom coach. And as for the sixth and seventh comments, some people just talk about what they wish to talk about and ignore the subject. We like to pretend we live in neutered society but men still like to look at pretty women and women still love athletic men. It is not pathetic it is a woman's choice. Some women choose cheerleading and some choose more athletic or academic activities. But they don't usually let the ugly girls on the pom squad.

Well Slug, we also tolerate jocks getting all the praise and sports programs getting all the money, while math, science and the arts (yes, all those silly little things like music, visual arts and theatre) get pushed to the wayside because they don't make money. If we didn't glorify sports so much, perhaps there would be no need for pom squads. I can't really see a pom squad at a chess match (outside of an SNL skit), can you?

You didn't point out the most important detail here - the woman is a POM coach, a useless and old-fashioned activity, designed for insecure women to flaunt their bodies in public in front of thousands. WHEN will our teenage girls be taught by their parents that this is a degrading activity, making pom coaches and pom lines obsolete? I can't believe it hasn't happened by now (we are pathetic as a culture that tolerates this behavior).

It is not only the pics. She also forged parents signatures on medical release forms. The paper didn't go into this. Why its because of who she works for. Last time I checked forgery is a crime!!!!!! And when you work with kids you don't request them to become friends on the myspace. It's like throwing paper in the fire.

Doxie, I didn't directly call her a stripper -- but her "aspiring dancer and model" label is how strippers politely refer to themselves. And if you had bothered to make it to the last paragraph, I was sticking up for Ms. Shaw and I personally think these parents are overreacting.

Prescott,

You have this all wrong, the Waukegan High School pom coach Natosha Shaw, is not a stripper, you have taken this story and made it something it is not. I could tell you facts about this story, but why bother; you have obviously changed the story to get a better reaction. Nonetheless, shame on you!

You go girl- Petulant Pixie! You said it all.

No. It's icky, but when you cross that line you get into the potential to violate all sorts of rights. I'd say let's stick to the law, if a teacher or coach does something illegal, then that can be grounds for wanting them fired. Otherwise, we could go on a witch hunt for teachers who are single parents, teachers who are gay/lesbian, teachers who are living with boyfriends or girlfriends, teachers who smoke (ciagarettes, not pot, because pot's illegal), teachers who have wacky politcal views and so on and on. We need a clear line in cases like this and I say the clear line is the law.
