This Democrat Wouldn’t Get My Vote
Although I tend to be liberal on most issues, that doesn’t mean that I agree with every Democrat all the time. Case in point: House Democrat Rep. Charles Rangel has just announced that he will be proposing a measure in the next few months to reinstate the draft.?‚? One of his reasons for making this proposal is to “deter politicians from launching wars.”
“There’s no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm’s way,” Rangel said.
Um, is it just me or is that a really bad reason to reinstate the draft? What kind of crazy reverse psychology game is he trying to play??‚? I’m pretty sure that I don’t want the draft used as a way to double dog dare the administration to go to war. Because newsflash, Rangel, they may decide to go to war anyway. Are you ready to?‚? allow your children or grandchildren to be drafted into a war they may not even believe in? Because I’m not. And I’m pretty sure most Americans aren’t either.
The good news is that there is almost no chance in hell that this will pass through Congress given that Rangel has already failed twice to pass?‚? similar legislation. Maybe he should take the hint and figure out a better way to deter politicians from going to war.
Hmmmmm…?‚? Might I suggest the upcoming Global Orgasm for Peace Rally?

Oh, he and a few other dems have been proposing that for years. Before they declared it a deterrent for wars, they said it would be horrible publicity for republicans, especially if it happened now.
He’s insane, but I have a feeling some people are gonna support him in theory, like Cindy Sheehan. I’ll bet she’s one that’s on board with that reverse psychology.
Although, I’m not sure if I don’t agree with having everyone serve, even in community service (or the military) for a year or so, as a way of giving back. Even in admin jobs, it sure would alleviate some of the strain on our reservists and God knows there are people in our country that are in need of extra services. I might be able to get behind that in theory.

You bet me to the punch! I was going to write about the same thing. What scares me about this is selfish and personal. My son is almost 15! Funny thing too - he wants to make the draft applicable to those between 18 and 42. 42? Well I’ll be 43 in February!

Don’t think that if we had a draft there wouldn’t be a way for the kids of wealthy politicians to escape the front lines. They always have before. And no one’s suggested drafting women at age 18, though even if they did you know you’d never see the Bush twins in fatigues. I’ve got three sons and one is about to be 18. Another one almost 17. We wouldn’t have to talk about draft if we hadn’t gone to war unprepared and based on bad intelligence. Have we learned NOTHING from Vietnam?

We have plenty of reservists. We don’t need a draft people! It’s just a political ploy to get people even more angry about the war.
The last time it was put before Congress to vote on ( in 2003 — also brought forth by Rangel), our dear Rangel voted against the draft.
