what an absolutely brilliant post! it so reflects all the thoughts i've had while writing my recent book 'the madness of modern families: the race to compete with other bl**dy parents'. although it's basically a humor title, we're deadly earnest about the message. the problem is, it's such a tricky and personal subject, all bound up with self-esteem and the sudden shock of realising that an mba isn't any help at all at three in the morning when your baby has the colic - if you didn't laugh, you'd cry. thanks for summing up this consumerist frenzy so perfectly!

I'm on board with this, Jessica. I see it all the time too - kids who crave their parents attention and at the same time are given every amenity and luxury. Stuff does not equal time and energy. The latter are worth much more.

But that doesn't mean I don't like me my stuff! I do! I just think that there is a balance to be sought. The problem arises when a parent thinks that some thing is the same as some one.

Whew - that's heavy duty for early morning!
