Madonna’s new fashion accessory

Posted October 16, 2006 at 6:48 pm by Jessica

By now I’m sure you’ve heard some of the most important news to date — news that towers over insignificant “news” like North Korea’s increasing ability to annihilate us within minutes — Madonna has a little African baby to call her own. Refusing to be one upped by her younger, better acting colleague (of course, that’s not saying much), Angelina Jolie, Madonna decided to don her own orphan.

There have been protests from child advocacy agencies in Malawi, where the baby is from, after the bending of rules allowed a non-Malawian person to adopt a Malawian baby. This rule is in place to halt baby trafficking, but Madonna is no baby trafficker, just an untalented publicity whore on a shopping spree for the newest celebrity fad — adopting African babies.

Apparently, the baby’s father did not want to give him up, but after his wife died of disease and both of his other sons were killed while stricken with malaria, he could not afford to keep him and was scared he would fall ill, too. So, instead of adopting a boy whose next of kin doesn’t want the child, she decides to take the one who’s father’s heart breaks, instead of helping to reunite them.

To top it all off, apparently Madonna had 10 orphan babies pre-selected for her (I’m not lying) and walked up and down a line-up while she decided which one to pick. Kind of like choosing between the purple or gold lamé boots. Decisions…decisions…

Rumor has it, the generous blond gave each orphan a copy of her pretentious children’s book, The English Roses, because we all know that the orphan boys in Malawi are so much better off reading about a jealous lot of girls who resent Bina because she is so beautiful.

Can I say it now??…what a fucking asshole! Talk about out of touch.

Oh, but it gets better. E! Online (don’t snicker, they’re right sometimes), reports that Madonna’s new toy flew “home” to Guy Ritchie and Madonna’s house, a completely normal household to be sure, with her entourage and a bunch of babysitters.

Madonna, you brave soul. I’m sure you will make a point of having David, your new orphan son, thank you for all you’re about to grace him with, above all, yourself. She’s our savior. She’s David’s savior!

I can’t help but picture a staunch, stuffed, high brow couple having the following conversation over tea.

“Darling, the Joneses have adopted an African.”
    “Is that so, my treasure?”
“I waaaant an African, snookems. I want to be the mother to a diseased underprivledged child too.”
“Alrighty then, call the Joneses and see how to get one. I’m sure if they can handle it, so can we.”

I’m apalled at the whole thing. Honestly I am no fan of Brangelina, but they swoop in, adopt and then the press seems to hit. The hoopla is after the fact, to make a point. And in a way, I don’t mind it much.

    This way, I mind. Much.

Amy, your description reminds me of Veruca Salt.

“I want a Malawi baby NOW, Daddy!”

These two comments cracked me up.

You know, if Madonna really truly cared about this boy, why wouldn’t she have just given the father some money to help him keep his son? I haven’t read up on this story, but from what I’ve read here, it seems like she cares more about herself than this child. At least he’ll be rich, and hopefully one day he’ll be able to reunite with his father.

As someone who lives in L.A. and is surrounded by the “celebrity culture” (i.e., little dogs as accessories), this story makes me queazy. I see little orphans (or even poor children with parents. WTF?) as the new dog-in-designer-carry-all: Just the latest craze.

Back in the ’80s, I was hoping Madonna would go the way of spandex, shoulder pads and headbands, and simply disappear…but no! Now she’s preying on poor children with dead family members.

Absolutely! Little orphans are just a new fad or accessory. If she really wanted to help, she could have helped the family out finacially. Oprah donates millions to African nations. In her heart, she has adopted them all(not to sound like a robotic Oprah fan). Couldn’t Madonna cough up a few thousand to aide this family, instead? They could thank her by sending photos and letters. Theses celebs think you can go to a baby store and just buy ‘em anymore. I’m talking to YOU Sharon Stone (she’s on, like, her third adopted kid) and Meg Ryan (she had the balls to adopt a little girl from China with her own ethnic name already, and then renamed her Daisy Tru once she brought her home)! And don’t get me started on Brangelina!
Look, celebs! If you can’t have kids or you really have a caring heart and want to help or adopt a kid, America has planty of underprivilaged children and orpahns to go around. Can’t we start saving our own country before we try to save the whole world!?!?

Madonna’s gotta keep up with the Jolie-Pitts, don’t you know? Part of me admires people who have a lot and want to share it with someone who doesn’t, but somehow this all seems like a plea for attention. Call me cynical.

Madonna is an entertainer. Anything she does should be looked at as an exercise in self promotion and not much else. She does these things to get attention…

People should not get so worked up over her every move. She is an exceptional marketer. Even Forbes Magazine recognized her as a marketing wiz some years ago…
