In Hennepin County Minnesota, Child Protection can be an oxymoron. I have witnessed some horrible situations in which brown families are purposefully broken up and never quite able to recover. Children split up from each other. A one year old and his two year old sister placed with an 80 year old foster parent and her 50 year old son!! That tends to be a red flag to me to a least check out in more detail as to why would a 50 year old be still living with his mother. If he is needed to care for her then why would she be considered fit enough to care for toddlers? I wish that the news would cover in more depth. From my experience, I would guess that some areas are inflated and others are simply not mentioned at all. It certainly could be that these mothers were drinking--or not. Notice nothing was mentioned regarding their alcohol levels nor non of the children. Not only that but, they did not say for a fact that some were smoking pot only that supposedly one of the children said that. Tell me, how difficult would it be to prove that right away? These are the types of half truths used frequently to oppress people of color in Minneapolis instead of lifting them up with a true compassionate heart. Furthermore, if you are ever in the area, stop by St. Josephs home and notice the dirty windows upon entering and feel the deadness of spirit in an area that is suppose to offer refuge and comfort. If in fact the Mammas did wrong, they should have been there with their children that evening especially with the one that had a glass (note they said about 7 oz) of beer while the child slept it off. They should have been with their children and with someone who has a clear heart who could have been there with them to give them love and comfort and avenues for change where the need be. Taking parents away from children only hurts more and destroys family bonds. Saddle up close by these mothers sides along with their children and help and encourage, do not destroy anc create more havoc in a life already stressed as mothers of six children. In conclusion, be careful of hearsay. Social workers in Child Protection have no jobs if they don't have clients. Like most everyone, they too have an ego. Therefore, some have an agenda to prove the parent wrong no matter what because if the worker jumped to conclusions in the beginning not looking at the entire picture, and misjudged the mother, and the mother is found fit, the worker is then found wrong. When this happens, these children have already been damaged by being taken away from their parent during a very scary time in which they needed their Mother's arms and hugs and kisses and prayers before bedtime more then ever before. Oh, yes, the response to that is there is counciling available for that. How sad, it would not be needed in the first place nor would we have to waste hard earned tax money on that. That money perhaps could have been spent on food or shelter costs instead or maybe even on a few good childrens books for Mamma to read to her child before bed. Be kind to these women.
