Pit bulls and children do not mix
People own pit bulls to use as a weapon and if you are part of the few that doesn’t own a pit bull for a weapon, then know you’re amongst the majority of trash that does. Nobody thinks, “Gee, a pit bull would be a GREAT family dog.” A pug is a great family dog, a pit bull is not. In fact, why not just go out and get your family a bear or a tiger? And if you’re fortunate enough to live in an area where one of your neighbors owns one of these weapons of mass destruction, then do yourself a favor and move (your property value isn’t going to soar with pit bulls running around anyway) or get your village to sign an ordinance banning these animals. Children deserve better. People deserve better.
From the website dogbitelaw.com, here are some stats on dogs that kill:
As stated above, there are two problems that have been reported as though there is only a single problem, namely there are canine homicides (i.e., dog bite related human fatalities) and the dog bite epidemic. The dogs responsible for the bulk of the homicides are pit bulls and Rottweilers:
“Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996….[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities.” (Sacks JJ, Sinclair L, Gilchrist J, Golab GC, Lockwood R. Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998. JAVMA 2000;217:836-840.)
Other breeds were also responsible for homicides, but to a much lesser extent. A 1997 study of dog bite fatalities in the years 1979 through 1996 revealed that the following breeds had killed one or more persons: pit bulls, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas. (Dog Bite Related Fatalities,” Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, May 30, 1997, Vol. 46, No. 21, pp. 463 et. seq.)
Owners of such dogs should be aware that if their dogs attack a person, the attacks may be scrutinized by law enforcement. The reason is that irresponsible behavior with or toward a dog whose breed is known to bite has caused a rising and unacceptable injury and death toll, which authorities are determined to stem.
“Irresponsible behavior” is defined differently from place to place. In California, for example, it can be a felony for a person to possess a dog trained to fight, attack or kill that, because of the owner’s lack of ordinary care, bites two people or seriously injures one person. (See Felony prosecution of attack dog owners.)
In different parts of the United States at the current time, there are a number of parents who are on trial for manslaughter because their dogs have killed their children. In these cases, the prosecutors have taken the position that the parents behaved irresponsibly because they left their children in the company of dogs most likely to bite.
There is an 8 out of 10 chance that a biting dog is male. (Humane Society of the United States.)
And here is the tragic story, brought to us by WTHR-Indianapolis, that tells a true account of just one out of thousands of tragedies that involve a child mamed or killed by a vicious dog each year. As a society, we fight for safer streets, safer schools, safer immunizations, safer foods, environment, homes, cars and so on, we need to keep ban dogs that are most likely to kill a child. People cannot be trusted to keep your children safe from their dogs. If you think the kind of person that chains up a pit bull or a rottweiler in their yard is of a level of sophistication that they keep innocent people in mind, then your are sorely mistaken.
Indianapolis - A toddler’s life is on the line after a pit bull attack. The victim’s family wants the owner held accountable.
It happened Friday afternoon in the 13-hundred block of South Belmont near Lambert Street on the city’s southwest side.
Police say the animal took control of the toddler and wouldn’t let go. His young victim’s blood was still on it’s snout while teams at Riley Hospital worked to save 2-year-old Amaia Hess.“She sustained serious injury to her face and it appears she may have been bitten on other parts of her body too. One of her eyes is missing at this point. The other eye is seriously injured,” said Sgt. Mathew Mount of the Indianapolis Police Department.
The little girl was in the stroller with her mother. A man opened his door and the dog, named Ozzie, ran out straight for the little girl.
“I seen the baby in the dogs mouth and the dog shaking the baby like a rag doll, just shaking, shaking, shaking,” said a witness.
Amay’s great uncle calls her a sweet loving child facing a long struggle.
“One eye was completely tore out but the pupils were good so they can do some reconstruction on that,” said the uncle. “The doctors said that there’s many many surgeries there to do.”
It’s the second pit bull biting at the house in a year.

Oh my dear stupid, naive Jessica… it amazes me how ignorant you are…people like you should be shot… REALLY… better yet, a law should be passed banning uneducated asses like you from posting garbage and frustrating others. Your ignorance is beyond me. You shouold educate yourself before making such ridiculous statements. I would laugh my ass off if one day a pug ripped apart your ankles because you provoked it to bite. Stupid little girl, it’s the owners - not the dogs… Any dog can be trained to attack, even a sweet little pug.

I am a pediatrician. During my residency, I cared for a toddler in the intensive care unit. Her skull had been crushed by the family pit bull, which had jumped up on the couch where she was sitting and attacked her without provocation. When the child was finally ready to go home, her father’s comment was, “The next pit bull we get will be different.” Although I cannot understand why so many people value their animals more than they do children (even their own child in this case), it is something I’ve observed repeatedly in my career and I’m sorry to see it again on this site. I’ve taken care of many children who were bitten by dogs; the only ones who had to be hospitalized were the ones who were attacked by pit bulls.
To Haley, the person who is pregnant and plans to keep the pit bull she knows to be aggressive…I pray you do not regret that decision. Your baby is depending on YOU to keep him/her safe. God bless, even if this makes you angry.

I don’t like pit-bulls. I do not think that all pit-bulls are inheritently bad, but I do think a disproportionate number of this breed are owned by irresponsible owners. The thing is that EVERY dog has the ability to turn on anyone, no matter how well-behaved and cared for they may be. I myself was attacked by a black lab - I knew the owners and that dog was treated like a family member. Anyway, what concerns me about pit-bulls is the incredible force with which they attack when they do turn. They just do so much more damage because of their genetic background. I worry about them in dense neighborhoods where boundaries between properties aren’t clear. They are protective and known escape-artists. It is just a bad mix. Anyway, just throwing my two cents in. I know that some of them are perfectly nice animals, but I certainly wouldn’t voluntarily bring one in to a home with children, and I have to admit I question those who do. Haley, you should get rid of your dog. You are asking for trouble and you will NEVER forgive yourself when that dog injures your child. You are being incredibly naive and I question your priorities. And I feel petty for saying this but, Pittbull Lover, based on your grammar I doubt that you are truly wealthy or if you are it is because you won the lotto ??? You can take the girl out of the trailer park, but…

Some pit bull are very beautiful animals and some are very ugly animals. Huh, kinda like people. I love dogs, I love all animals, but I love my baby boy more. Way more. Any parent that is willing to compromise the safety and well being of their child (in any way, including keeping a potentially harmful animal)is an idiot. It seems like it is just easier for some people to make excuses for their dogs, than it is for them to make a good decision about not keeping a dangerous dog. I think if a person wants a pit bull as a pet, they have to be willing to make a real commitment to that dog. That commitment should include sound decisions about other animals, about training, and about the living conditions being provided for the dog. I realize that pit bulls have had a lot of negative media attention. Some of those reports are TRUE. So it is a bit unnerving to hear everyone jumping on the “bad rap” bandwagon. Perfectly good dogs have been known to turn vicious, with no warning, for no apparent reason. So have people. There are way more KooKoo people out there than ever before. And the same is probably true of KooKoo dogs.
Anyway, I was just going to write in and comment on how out of hand the discussion got. Then I decided to put in my crazy two cents. Or to scents. Or too sense. LOL Please forgive me. We all make mistakes……

Hey Cyndi,
Your statement about commitment in dog ownership was great. I hope everybody reads it and takes it to heart. Every dog should be blessed with owners who make those sound choices.
Sadly this isn’t the case the majority of the time. People forget what dogs are and treat them like children. Dogs are animals plain and simple …no better, no worse. They need us as
owners to be smarter than they are and provide proper training.
People who own dogs and then get bit by them
and worse usually say the dog ” turned on them “.
Dog ” turning ” is a myth, it just does not happen. A so called good dog that bites it’s owner was never a good dog in the first place. The truth of the matter is we as owners make mistakes and some people have no idea that they are already the subordinate pack member in the household. The only way a well trained dog of any breed would Turn on it’s master is if the dog had a brain abnormality or was Rabid or if the dog was tormented and teased enough to bite.
Dog turning is right up there with my other favorite, Pit bulls have locking jaws.
Dominance in dogs is not always an in your face type of thing. Lots of times it starts small like with possesiveness over food and toys, maybe you let your dog lead you on your daily walks. When you leave the house the dog goes out the door first. He shares the couch with you at TV time. Sleeps in your bed at night.
Small stuff to us humans but it’s huge in dog talk. All the stuff listed above most people can pick somthing out and say ” yep that’s me ”
These are common mistakes ( and just a few ) that get people bitten by a so-called good dog.
You watch the tube with rusty every night and
your son or daughter or maybe even yourself wants his spot on the couch and zap you get bit.
The dogs fault ? Did he turn ? Nope bad owner practices. Don’t get me wrong every dog on the couch is not a ticking time bomb but when a dog bites an owner 99.9% of the time it’s our own fault. I lost my pit to cancer and as soon as
my 2 boys are old enough I plan on getting another. I almost said enough is enough and gave in to all the bullshit you go through
when owning a pit bull, but when the time comes Im getting another one. Giving up on this fantastic breed of dog is in my opinion a cop out. Breed specific legislation is about as effective as the war on drugs. It doesn’t work.
God bless the noble pit bull !

I was bitten by a poodle when I was younger, got a nasty infection and almost lost my foot but I’m not blog blog blogging away on the interweb about how evil they are. I own a border collie/pit bull mix and I trust her with my life. I’ve never been around a nicer, more loyal dog.
But, I suppose because I own a pit bull I am some sort of white trash hick. Excuse me while I go ddrink some pabst and watch NASCAR and let my dog “chew off toes and rip out throats.”

Oh, and while there are certainly stats that support the fact that pit bulls are HUMAN KILLING MACHINES OF DEATH! Check this out:
“In December of 2003, a temperament test was given to dog breeds around the country, and a score was given based on the proportion of the animals that passed over the animals that failed. The final results gave the American Pit Bull Terrier a passing rate of 83.9%, which was slightly better than that of the “docile” Golden Retriever — 83.2%.”
LOLZ KILL ALL GOLDEN RETRIEVERS!!!~~!!~!!!~! THEY ARE ANGRY AND WILL MURDER DEATH KILL LITTLE KIDS!

The fact that all of you have “done research” to support your point, but never found that #87’s were completely WRONG (and obviously, mockingly made up) makes all of you look like fools!!!!!! IMO

“A study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that dog attacks over a 15-year span in the United States resulted in 279 human deaths, or a little more than 17 a year. With an estimated dog population of 59 million, this annual fatality rate means that only an infinitesimal percentage of dogs are involved in such violent activity.
Still, in a continuation of its study, the CDC found that between 1979 and 1996, pit bulls accounted for 60 dog bite-related fatalities. This count more than doubled the rate of the next-most-frequent breed, the rottweiler. Though this fact lends itself to the belief that pit bulls are more dangerous than other dogs, one must also remember that between 1965 and 2001, a total of 36 different breeds were involved in fatal attacks on humans in the United States.
A 1994 study investigating the reasons and commonalities among the 585,000 average annual dog bite incidents revealed that Chow Chows and German Shepherds, not pit bulls, were frequent biters. Though this stat does not absolve pit bulls from the criticism they receive, it shows that their breed is not the only one with an aggressive streak. The essence of this often-conflicting information is that pit bulls are not the only breed of dog that shows a tendency to attack. In fact, there are over a dozen breeds that frequently show up in analyses as having attacked humans.
These numbers are often distorted by the media, which sensationalizes the pit bull’s tendency to be aggressive. As a result, people generally fear that this dog will attack humans. A study conducted by the American Temperament Test Society simply rejects this notion. In December of 2003, a temperament test was given to dog breeds around the country, and a score was given based on the proportion of the animals that passed over the animals that failed. The final results gave the American Pit Bull Terrier a passing rate of 83.9%, which was slightly better than that of the “docile” Golden Retriever — 83.2%.”
All Golden Retrievers must burn in hell.

Look, I remember back in the 80’s, the dog to fear was the Dobermin Pincher. WHY? Because it was the dog of choice for the inner city, low economic population, which often influence the social trends. They raised these dogs to be mean so they could effectively protect them and to also be a weapon as an attack dog. The dogs did what they were trained to do and there was a surge in attacks by Dobermins.
In the 90’s, it was so UNcool to have a Dobermin because they had now become very popular in the suburbs and with owners who wanted to prove that they could be a docile breed. Now the IT breed to have was a Rottweiler. They were treated the same as the Dobermin and the same results ensued. Now people feared the Rottweiler.
In 2000, the new IT breed became the Pitt Bull. As things stay the same, the pitts do what they’re trained to do and we’ve seen a surge in Pitt Bull attacks.
The people here defending the breed are the ones simply trying to prove everyone wrong. If it was 10 years ago, they would have owned Rotts. 20 years ago it would have been Dobermins. It’s more about their personality and the reasons they choose THAT dog, than it is about the dog itself.
Any study stretched over a long enough period will generally balance things out as there are always trends affecting people’s habits. However, I’m sure if the results of that study were broken down in decades, you would see that each breed would have a surge of attacks against humans based solely on their popularity at that time. I’m also sure you would see a sharp increase in attacks as the popularity of one breed waned and another began. By the mid-decade, as suburbia begins owning the popular breed, the % of attacks by that breed will begin to drop.
It is all about the way a dog is treated and who their owner is. NO dog is ever truly 100% trustworthy. They are animals and too often people treat them like a “member of the family” with too many freedoms that blur the line between where their place is in the “pack”, as that is how the family/living arrangement is viewed by the dog. When THEIR right’s are infringed upon by another dog/person, they will defend their place in the pack. Hasn’t anyone ever watched a National Geographic before? They are GENETICALLY hardwired to think this way.
So who’s right??? Everyone, and no one.

Well, he wasn’t an authentic Pit Bull, he was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but until he became senile (which can happen with any dog breed), he definately was one of the family. I guess I’m a really bad parent (or person! and people should have moved away from us!), and we’re just lucky that our kids made it through all right.

a year ago, I was as ignorant about pitbulls as you are today. Get a pitbull fromthe shelter and contribute to is not cool to be cruel campaign.
I have a year old pitbull that takes care of a bearded dragon in the backyard.
I just adopted a ten month old pitbull from the shelter. He is so scared to be left alone. He wont sleep until I am in bed. He wont close his eyes. So if you need to write about pitbulls, write about the owners and the people that are mistreating this loving dogs and how they should be punished. Maybe, start pushing a new law “animal cruelty is a felony and you get the same punishment as the animal got”
These are the smartest loving sociable dogs.

pit bulls kill only 3 people a year, but 2,000 children are killed by their parents a year. That is about 3 a day. Cigaretts kill about 400,000 people a year, and second hand smoke kills around 35,000 a year which would you rather see banned?
You would also be stupid to think only pit bulls are capable of this. Have you heard aboutr the pomeranian that killed a 6 week old infant? or how about the dalmation that killed a 7 year old girl?

“HOUSTON — A six-year-old Houston-area boy is recovering from a pit bull attack that led to him getting more than 200 stitches in his face.
Family members say Logan Palomo required surgery following the attack Sunday as he visited his mother.
Brandon Palomo says his son was mauled when the boy was going to bed — and the child tried to give the dog a goodnight hug.
The owner of the dog, who is an acquaintance of the boy’s mother, has told the family that the pit bull will be euthanized.”

and how do you know this is a pit bull? was it a pit bulll or a look alike, as is often the case. I read a story about a pit bull attack, come to find out it was not a pit bull at all, but a boxer, and why did the dog react like this? perhaps postive reenforcment to aggressive behavior because the parents wanted to look cool with a “tough dog”

why are you doing this to a brred that scores just as good, if not a little higher as the golden retriver during temperment tests?
hasn’t this breed sufferd enough in mans hands? I had to write an argument paper for my college comp class that I would like every narrow minded person to read that has a hate for pit bulls, for absolutly no reason:
Guilty before proven innocent?
Do I believe breed specific legislation (bsl) should be passed anywhere? Absolutely not. But unfortunatly, it already has.
Breed specific legislation affects only a certain breed or breeds, but effects no other. This will make it illegal to own, or breed, any of the banned dogs, and if one is brought into a shelter, it is euthanized right away with no chance of adoption. the main targets of this narrow-minded legislation are: the rottweiler, Doberman, Siberian husky, wolf hybrids (although i do not belive anyone should own a wolf, they should be free) german shepards, and last but certainly not least the pit bull.
Since when has everything changed? since when is it guilty before proven innocent? Since when is it ok to kill puppies simply because of who their parents were?
I cannot believe that there are people out there that are so ignorant, that they want to see mass genocide committed against a specific breed, we were stupid enough to wipe the dodo bird off of the face of the earth, lets not do this again.
Also, how do you define the term “pit bull”, when the term is applied to three different breeds: the American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, and the American pit bull terrier, and even sometimes the bull terrier?
Why all the hate against pit bulls? There are much worse things going on in the world. Cigarettes kill about 440,000 people a year, 35,000 people die a year due to second hand smoke, 20,000 children die due to gun shot wounds, 2,000 are killed by their own parents. That is over 3 children a day. Pit bulls kill about three people a year.
Approximately 150 people in the US are killed a year by falling coconuts, that means you are more than 60 times more likely to be killed by a palm tree than a pit bull, each year 350 people drown in their tubs, so that means you 151 times more likely to be killed in your tub, than by a pit bull
Yes, pit bulls have killed people, but you would be stupid to think only a pit bull is capable of this. It can be estimated that for every pit bull that kills 10.5 million do not.
A Pomeranian in California recently killed a six week old infant, a Dalmatian recently killed a seven year old girl, two Akitas recently mauled a seven year old boy, the only reason he is alive today is because he was saved by a pit bull.
I was shocked to learn that the most emergency room visits due to animal bites were not from a pit bull, or rottweiller, or any dog for that matter, but from the common everyday cat.
I know I have personally met more aggressive Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, and poodles in my day, but most people would not think twice about owning any of these breeds.
Lets take a look at pit bulls in a different light.
The first official USA war dog was a pit bull named stubby, the dog from the little rascals was a pit bull who was around kids all the time, and he never got mauled, it was a pit bull who saved her elderly owner from a fire, and my Staffordshire terrier is an excellent therapy dog.
They truly are not the “vicious man eating killers” that the media has made them out to be, infact they pass their temperament tests with amazing results 85.5%, this test is used to document a dogs personality, including aggressive behavior with strangers, children, and their food bowls.
Cocker spaniels pass with 81.5% and collies, like Lassie pass with only 79%.
When did everything change? They were once known as “nanny dogs” because they were, oops sorry, ARE so great with kids. These dogs were entrusted by many as a playmate, and also to protect their children from intruders, and n wild animals.
While I was doing my research for this paper, I came across several sites that stated pit bulls were actually one of the only dogs bred to be non-human aggressive, because while fighting animals in the pit, the owners had to be in the pit with them, often picking them up in mid-fight, so no wonder any dog that displayed human aggression was automatically disqualified, killed, and kept out of the gene pool, and of course that still holds true today, animals that display human aggression are euthanized.
Now I doubt that BSL will come to this state, because we are one of the freest sates, but if it does I urge you to vote against it, lets not let this be another case of the blind leading the blind, I cannot believe that there are people out there that want to kill 10.5 million dogs for the action of 0.94% of it’s breed. Do your own research before making such a harsh decision that all pit bulls are “evil;.”
